Each NBA team will be able to nominate one of its players to be considered for the award. Five finalists and one winner will be chosen from the list of people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The award will consist of a trophy with Abdul-Jabbar\u2019s name on it, as well as $100,000 that will go to a charity of the player\u2019s choice. The remaining top four finalists will get $25,000 each, which will also go to charity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI\u2019m really proud of what the NBA has been doing all along in terms of activism and their efforts for equality and inclusion,\u201d Abdul-Jabbar said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sports-europe-nba-entertainment-sports-61d7f27674ce867620ac074fa14de2c1\"><span class=\"s1\">interview<\/span><\/a> with The Associated Press. \u201cI think they\u2019ve done a great job. I\u2019ve always felt that was something important and teaming up with them to be involved in this award is very meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIn addition to being one of our greatest players, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has devoted much of his life to advocating for equality and social justice,\u201d NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a release announcing the creation of the award. \u201cWith this new award, we are proud to recognize and celebrate NBA players who are using their influence to make an impact on their communities and our broader society.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Abdul-Jabbar was involved in activism at a young age and met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he was 17 years old. AP reported that Abdul-Jabbar\u2019s great-uncle was a doctor during World War I in England and developed a reputation as the \u201cBlack Doctor of Paddington\u201d as he provided treatment to war veterans at no charge.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI think it\u2019s just really a family tradition and something that makes sense,\u201d Abdul-Jabbar said. \u201cWhen you see something wrong you have to speak out about it and try to effect some change.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The outlet reported that Abdul-Jabbar praises NBA players for attempting to effect change now as many players have spoken out against the perception of police brutality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAll of these needs, they have to start with small steps,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, we can\u2019t just take a big, huge giant step. That usually ends up being a step in the wrong puddle. So, we\u2019ve got to take our time and understand that we need to take all these little steps to get to where we need to go \u2014 where there\u2019s justice. We don\u2019t want to make policemen\u2019s jobs impossible. But we don\u2019t want police just arbitrarily killing people. It\u2019s going to take some effort, but we can get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As professional sports players have weighed into social issues over the past year, many have begun to see pushback against their actions. Pro-basketball player Lebron James recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/i-fueled-the-wrong-conversation-about-makhia-bryant-lebron-james-avoids-responsibility-portrays-bryant-as-a-victim\">tried to walk\u00a0back<\/a> his actions after posting a tweet that appeared to dox the Ohio police officer who shot Ma\u2019Khia Bryant while in the process of saving another girl\u2019s life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI fueled the wrong conversation about Ma\u2019Khia Bryant and I owe it to her and this movement to change it,\u201d James wrote on Twitter. \u201cThank you to @fabiolacineas for educating us about Ma\u2019Khia and her story and why this needs to be about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.5796178343949\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I fueled the wrong conversation about Ma\u2019Khia Bryant and I owe it to her and this movement to change it.
