That\u2019s our red line,\u201d McConnell says next to McCarthy. \u201cThis discussion \u2026 will not include revisiting the 2017 tax bill\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Burgess Everett (@burgessev) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/burgessev\/status\/1392524046747721731?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The SALT \u2014 or State And Local Tax \u2014 cap is a provision in the tax code that allows citizens who pay more state income taxes to pay less in federal income taxes.\u00a0Many economists and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/19\/business\/salt-tax-repeal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lawmakers<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/business\/2021\/03\/state-and-local-tax-deduction-salt-democrats-schumer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criticized<\/a> the SALT provision, arguing that it is a wealth transfer from Republican to Democratic states.<\/p>\n<p>New Jersey has a top income tax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.nj.us\/treasury\/taxation\/git2020taxrate.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rate<\/a> of 10.75%, while Kentucky has a flat income tax <a href=\"https:\/\/smartasset.com\/taxes\/kentucky-tax-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rate<\/a> of 5%.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/10\/27\/salt-deduction-becomes-latest-sticking-point-on-tax-reform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Act<\/a> lowered the SALT <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/07\/wilford-even-the-new-york-times-now-agrees-wealthy-taxpayers-dont-need-a-salty-tax-break\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cap<\/a> to $10,000, meaning that taxpayers may deduct that much money from the federal taxes. There was <a href=\"https:\/\/smartasset.com\/taxes\/trumps-plan-to-eliminate-the-state-and-local-tax-deduction-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previously<\/a> no limit to that deduction. Democrats like Gottheimer want their constituents to be able to deduct more, while many Republicans want to eliminate the deduction entirely.<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/03\/31\/nancy-pelosi-coronavirus-covid-19-stimulus-tax-rebates-wealthy-salt-cap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: REPORT: Pelosi Considering Coronavirus Stimulus Package That Would Offer Tax Rebates For Wealthy)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A bipartisan group of lawmakers is calling for President Joe Biden\u2019s infrastructure bill to return the unlimited SALT deduction. They are threatening to vote against any new legislation that does not eliminate the cap, CNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/04\/27\/calls-to-end-salt-deduction-cap-threaten-passage-of-bidens-tax-plan-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic New Jersey Rep.
