Speaking with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/celebrity\/terry-crews-says-porn-addiction-almost-destroyed-his-marriage-fame-made-it-worse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PEOPLE Every Day<\/a>,\u201d Crews and his wife said that the addiction pushed them into thinking about marital separation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best piece of advice I ever got was a good friend of mine, he was the first guy I called when Rebecca was like, \u2018don\u2019t come home.\u2019 He said \u2018Terry, you need to get better for you,\u2019\u201d the actor explained. \u201cYou have to understand that was a watershed moment. In my culture, as a man in sports, you do things to get things. You do good things to get cookies, you know? You work hard to get money, you do these things to get sex, but to actually improve just for yourself, that was a foreign thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crews later added that his cultural upbringing as a black man in Detroit made him reject the idea of therapy as something only \u201ccrazy\u201d people do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCulturally, you have to understand, where I grew up, I grew up in Flint, Michigan, African American culture, going to therapy was admitting you\u2019re crazy,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was something that you didn\u2019t do. Also, sports culture was one where anger helped you. It was aggression, it was competition, everything had to be perfection or nothing. So, you\u2019re talking about things that help people as a man, it got me really, really far business-wise but it was disintegrating my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crews said that his success actually made the situation worse by giving him a safe space to hide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuccess is the warmest place to hide,\u201d he said. \u201cI had so many people that were telling me I was great and there was no problem. Hollywood didn\u2019t care. It still doesn\u2019t care if you lose your family, it happens every day. They\u2019re like, \u2018Hey man, now we can put you in three movies!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo fame just made it worse,\u201d said Rebecca. \u201cSo it\u2019s really true that power and success amplifies what\u2019s going on inside you. And that is why I couldn\u2019t help him and I\u2019m thankful and I\u2019m lucky that he made the choice to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said that she began to see \u201creal behavioral\u201d change in Crews beyond his porn addiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI say he\u2019s still earning it,\u201d she said. \u201cBut the truth be told, progressively, I saw what I felt was real fruit, real change, real behavioral change in my spouse. It was in the way he stopped reacting angrily to everything. It was in the newfound patients that I saw with me and with his children.
