U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) defines \u2018non-essential\u2019 travel as travel for \u2018tourism purposes (e.g., sightseeing, recreation, gambling, or attending cultural events),\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natlawreview.com\/article\/biden-administration-extends-us-mexico-and-us-canada-covid-19-border-restrictions\">according to National Law Review<\/a>. \u201c\u2019Essential\u2019 travel includes, among other categories, U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents returning to the United States, individuals traveling for medical purposes, and individuals traveling to work in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The measure also blocks non-citizens from entering the United States \u201cwhen doing so is required in the interest of public health.\u201d More controversially, the provision allows the United States government to turn away or \u201cexpel\u201d individuals who present themselves at the border seeking asylum without assessing their case under the excuse that such asylum seekers may carry COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Immigrant activists \u2014 and, notably, Harris herself \u2014 blasted the \u201cTitle 42\u201d policy under Trump, and claimed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/22398712\/biden-title-42-migrant-border-expel\">per Vox<\/a>, \u201cthat it prevents migrants from exercising their right under US and international law to seek asylum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leahy.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/4.7.20%20FINAL%20Jud%20letter%20to%20DHS%20re%20Title%2042%20-%20SIGNED.pdf\">The letter Harris signed was particularly pointed<\/a>, accusing the Trump administration, at the time, of enacting a \u201cstartling expansion of executive powers\u201d designed to limit those seeking \u201chumanitarian protection\u201d from seeking asylum, and suggesting that the Trump administration was causing a public health crisis by arbitrarily enforcing its interpretation of an outdated statute.<\/p>\n<p>Harris\u2019 former colleagues in the Democratic caucus have called on the Biden administration to take immediate action on the issue, according to Politico.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018More than 60 House Democrats are urging President Joe Biden\u00a0to end the policy, saying it has no legal basis. Dozens of\u00a0public health experts say it has \u2018no scientific basis as a public health measure.\u2019 Immigration advocates have filed legal challenges as well,\u201d the outlet said.<\/p>\n<p>A Biden administration official gave no further details on how Harris feels about Title 42 now and suggested that the Department of Health and Human Services is handling the administrative paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe administration\u2019s position is her position,\u201d the official said. \u201cJust given where we are with the pandemic, the administration \u2014 her, the president, administration-wide \u2014 are supportive of Title 42 being in place until HHS cancels the order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
