And has there been any advice on that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neuberger answered, \u201cWe recognize that victims of cyberattacks often face a very difficult situation. And they have to just balance off, in the cost-benefit, when they have no choice with regard to paying a ransom. Colonial is a private company, and we\u2019ll defer information regarding their decision on paying a ransom to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Madhani persisted, \u201cDid you \u2014 would the administration offer any advice on whether or not to pay a ransom?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, typically, that is a private-sector decision, and the administration has not offered further advice at this time,\u201d Neuberger replied. \u201cGiven the rise in ransomware, that is one area we\u2019re definitely looking at now to say, \u2018What should be the government\u2019s approach to ransomware actors and to ransoms overall?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FBI states on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/scams-and-safety\/common-scams-and-crimes\/ransomware\">website<\/a>, \u201cThe FBI does not support paying a ransom in response to a ransomware attack.\u00a0Paying a ransom doesn\u2019t guarantee you or your organization will get any data back. It also encourages perpetrators to target more victims and offers an incentive for others to get involved in this type of illegal activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James Knight of Digital Warfare Corp, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9566489\/Cybersecurity-experts-condemn-White-House-suggesting-companies-canpay-ransomware-demands.html\">The Daily Mail<\/a>, \u201cI think it is incredibly foolish that they even suggested it. It may be something that has to be done in practice \u2013 but to say it live was ridiculous. Absolute stupidity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jim Carafano, national security expert at the Heritage Foundation, slammed the Biden administration saying he was \u201cgobsmacked\u201d by Neuberger\u2019s remarks. \u201cThis is a very risk averse administration that doesn\u2019t want to get deeply bogged down in a lot of things that distract from its domestic agenda,\u201d Carafano said. \u201cFor them to take ownership of this pipeline issue would make it their problem. It is more convenient for them to push it back on the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neuberger stated on Monday, \u201cThe FBI identified the ransomware as the DarkSide variant, which they\u2019ve been investigating since October of last year.
