Tariffs currently affect $250 billion worth of Chinese imports while they affected about $370 billion in goods in 2018 and 2019, showing that U.S. consumers have looked elsewhere for tariffed goods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the goal was to reduce imports from China then it succeeded,\u201d Craig Allen, president of the U.S.-China Business Council, told the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p>However, Americans haven\u2019t shifted their purchases to U.S.-made products, according to the WSJ. In 2018, Vietnam supplied the 12th most imports to the U.S., but now supplies the 6th most.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese telecommunications industry has been the hardest hit by increased tariffs, according to the WSJ. Telecommunications equipment imports are down roughly $15 billion since the tariffs were put in place in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, semiconductor imports have shifted from China to Taiwan, Malaysia and Vietnam, the WSJ reported.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions between the U.S. and China rose throughout Trump\u2019s presidency as he repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/06\/21\/over-600-us-companies-support-trumps-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introduced new tariffs<\/a> on Chinese goods. The conflict culminated when Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/08\/23\/trump-retaliates-china-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">applied tariffs<\/a> of 30% on $250 billion of Chinese goods in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said President Joe Biden\u2019s administration wouldn\u2019t commit to removing tariffs from Chinese imports, the WSJ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/new-trade-representative-says-u-s-isnt-ready-to-lift-china-tariffs-11616929200?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo negotiator walks away from leverage, right?\u201d she told the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/02\/biden-says-hell-keep-trumps-china-trade-deal-and-tariffs-at-least-for-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">promised<\/a> he would keep the levies in place in December.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
