The image is the work of an artist.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The May 10 Facebook post features an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/caroljuneking\/posts\/10224850321435158\">image<\/a> of a butterfly that appears to have translucent, sparkling wings perched on a piece of vegetation. Text above the image identifies the creature as an \u201cEndangered Starry Butterfly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No such butterfly appears to actually exist, however. Check Your Fact found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=endangered+starry+butterfly&#038;source=hp&#038;ei=RE6bYLuLJor4tAXjgr6gBQ&#038;iflsig=AINFCbYAAAAAYJtcVPExFXWkDfLFYQDJ6E1gbr8J6wUA&#038;oq=endangered+starry+&#038;gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMYADIFCAAQxAI6BQgAELEDOggIABCxAxCDAToICC4QxwEQowI6AggAOgsILhCxAxDHARCjAjoICC4QsQMQgwE6CAguEMcBEK8BOgIILjoFCC4QkwI6BQguELEDOggIABCxAxDJAzoFCAAQkgM6CAguELEDEJMCOgYIABAWEB5QoQJYsydgoyxoA3AAeACAAZcBiAGfEJIBBDE0LjeYAQCgAQGqAQdnd3Mtd2l6sAEA&#038;sclient=gws-wiz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no information<\/a> regarding the \u201cstarry butterfly\u201d online, except other news outlets debunking its existence. The butterfly does not appear in the butterfly catalogs of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/spotlight\/buginfo\/butterfly\">Smithsonian<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/butterfly-conservation.org\/uk-butterflies\/a-to-z\">butterfly-conservation.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lepsoc.org\/\">the Lepidopterists\u2019 Society<\/a>, a group that \u201cpromotes the study and appreciation of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths)\u201d confirmed to Check Your Fact in an email that the \u201cstarry butterfly\u201d is not real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing exists similar to that in nature,\u201d the spokesperson said.\u00a0\u201cThat is either a bad photoshop job or a model of some sort.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/07\/31\/fact-check-seven-headed-snake-honduras\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Image Show Real A 7-Headed Snake?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/contact\/00336000014TlRMAA0\/leslie-ries\">Leslie Ries<\/a>, an associate professor of biology at Georgetown University who studies butterflies, said in an email: \u201cThere are 20000 species of butterflies \u2013 but I have definitely never heard of this or seen anything like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wings of the butterfly appear to have been digitally manipulated. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found the image of the butterfly without sparkling wings in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildaboutspain.com\/mainphp\/archives\/07-2012\">2012 blog post<\/a>\u00a0from nature photographer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildaboutspain.com\/about-me.html\">Stephen Powell<\/a>. That image shows the butterfly with partially translucent, white wings and no sparkles. Powell identifies the butterfly as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/butterfly-conservation.org\/butterflies\/black-veined-white\">Black-veined White<\/a>,\u201d a butterfly which is listed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/butterfly-conservation.org\/butterflies\/black-veined-white\">Butterfly Conservation<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>The altered image appears to be the work of Instagram \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/felicitycarter\/2018\/11\/02\/sara-shakeel-the-original-crystal-artist\/?sh=582680fe1928\">crystal artist<\/a>\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/sarashakeel.com\/\">Sara Shakeel<\/a>. The image of the butterfly was posted on her Instagram account in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BuhCIvTFFhx\/\">March 2019<\/a> with the caption, \u201cNothing Lasts Forever.\u201d Shakeel credits Powell as being the original photographer of the butterfly in her caption, and calls the post \u201cartwork.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows an \u201cendangered starry butterfly.\u201dVerdict: False No such butterfly exists, according to experts.
