Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) has ordered a Canadian energy company to shut down an oil and gas pipeline that runs through the Straits of Mackinac, claiming the pipeline is a \u201cticking timebomb\u201d despite the fact it has operated without a leak for nearly 67 years.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/may\/11\/michigan-governor-enbridge-line5-shutdown\">reported<\/a> that Whitmer told the Canadian company, Enbridge, to shut down the pipeline known as Line 5 by Wednesday due to activist fears that it could spill any day. The pipeline has operated for nearly 67 years and had never had a leak. A different Enbridge pipeline spilled 845,000 gallons of oil into Michigan\u2019s Kalamazoo River back in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Enbridge has been \u201cworking to tunnel beneath the lake bed to further improve the safety of the pipeline,\u201d the Guardian reported, because the pipeline has been hit in the past two years by boat anchors and cables.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese oil pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac are a ticking timebomb, and their continued presence violates the public trust and poses a grave threat to Michigan\u2019s environment and economy,\u201d Whitmer\u2019s office said in a statement regarding the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian reported that Whitmer campaigned on shutting down this pipeline, and is now pushing for its closure even as the U.S. Department of Transportation issued an emergency declaration for 17 states and the District of Columbia following a cyberattack on the country\u2019s largest pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire\u2019s Hank Berrien <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/emergency-declaration-issued-for-17-states-in-wake-of-cyberattack-on-colonial-pipeline\">reported<\/a>, the \u201cdeclaration permitted fuel to be transported by road to Alabama, Arkansas, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/05\/08\/colonial-pipeline-cyber-attack-485984\">told<\/a> Politico that the ransomware attack that caused the Colonial Pipeline to shut down was \u201cthe most significant and successful attack on energy infrastructure we know of in the United States.\u201d The attack \u201cmost immediately affected some of the company\u2019s business-side computer systems \u2014 not the systems that directly run the pipelines themselves,\u201d Politico reported, yet Colonial shut down the pipelines as a precaution while a third-party cybersecurity firm investigates.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Department of Transportation\u2019s declarations, four states \u2013 Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia \u2013 have issued emergency declarations over gas shortages, The Daily Wire\u2019s Amanda Prestigiacomo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/4-states-issue-states-of-emergency-as-gas-outages-hit-nation-on-bidens-watch-biden-scrambling\">reported<\/a>. In addition, more than 1,000 gas stations ran out of fuel on Tuesday, The Daily Wire\u2019s Ryan Saavedra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/1000-gas-stations-run-out-of-fuel-states-declare-emergencies\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn social media, multiple videos went\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-america-gas-stations-in-multiple-states-run-out-of-fuel-sparking-panic\">viral<\/a>\u00a0of people showing that their gas stations were out of fuel in states including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and others. Some analysts said that panic buying could be playing a role in gas stations running out of fuel,\u201d Saavedra wrote. \u201cEnergy Secretary Jennifer Granholm warned that gas stations in the impacted regions of the country will likely continue to experience a \u2018supply crunch\u2019 even after the pipelines are fully operational again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Homeland Security Advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall insisted there was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/there-is-not-a-supply-shortage-homeland-security-advisor-reacts-to-concerns-of-fuel-shortages-following-pipeline-cyberattack\">not a supply shortage<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
