Rand Paul (R-KY) questioned Dr. Anthony Fauci on Tuesday regarding U.S. funding of the\u00a0Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Chinese lab that some believe is the origin of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>After expressing skepticism regarding the consensus explanation that the virus emerged naturally in Chinese wet markets, Paul claimed the National Institute of Health (NIH)\u00a0funded the Wuhan lab\u2019s gain-of-function research, which is a form of study that attempts to render pathogens more infectious and lethal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fauci, do you still support funding of the NIH funding of the lab in Wuhan?\u201d Paul asked Fauci.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Paul, with all due respect, you are entirely, entirely and completely incorrect,\u201d Fauci replied. \u201cThe NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain of function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul then pointed to a\u00a0$3.4 million grant that\u00a0the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), the part of the NIH run by Fauci, gave to EcoHealth Alliance in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>EcoHealth Alliance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/politics\/politifact\/2021\/02\/09\/covid-dr-anthony-fauci-did-not-fund-research-tied-creation\/4450338001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paid<\/a>\u00a0the lab in Wuhan $598,500 over five years, according to PolitiFact, which also reported \u201call parties involved in the grant to the Wuhan Institute of Virology have denied that it involved gain-of-function research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci then denied Paul\u2019s claim that the research done by <a href=\"https:\/\/sph.unc.edu\/adv_profile\/ralph-s-baric-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Ralph Baric<\/a>, whose webpage says he obtained a $6 million grant from\u00a0NIAID in 2017 \u201cto accelerate the development of a promising new drug in the fight against deadly coronaviruses,\u201d could be characterized as \u201cgain-of-function.\u201d Paul <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridgeworkinggroup.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cited<\/a> the hundreds of doctors in the Cambridge Working Group who would disagree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you, in front of this group, categorically say that the COVID-19 virus could not have occurred by\u00a0serial passage in a laboratory?\u201d Paul later asked Fauci.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not have any accounting of what the Chinese may have done, and I\u2019m fully in favor of any further investigation of what went on in China,\u201d Fauci answered. \u201cHowever, I will repeat again, the NIH and NIAID categorically has not funded gain-of-function research to be conducted in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WATCH:<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dr. Paul Questions Dr. Fauci on Wuhan Lab and Gain of Function Research - May 11, 2021\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JSt7ls2zIoY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Paul tweeted that Fauci \u201cdissembled or tried to hide his long time support for \u2018gain-of-function\u2019 research which creates super-viruses that jump from animals to humans. 11 labs in the US create these super-viruses in the US and one of them collaborated with Wuhan Virology [Institute] \u2014Fauci has supported NIH funds for all these labs!\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.4782608695652\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">11 labs in the US create these super-viruses in the US and one of them collaborated with Wuhan Virology Inst \u2014Fauci has supported NIH funds for all these labs!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senator Rand Paul (@RandPaul) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RandPaul\/status\/1392147895646838787?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 11, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a 2011 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/a-flu-virus-risk-worth-taking\/2011\/12\/30\/gIQAM9sNRP_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">op-ed<\/a> for The Washington Post titled \u201cA flu risk worth taking,\u201d Fauci expressed support for gain-of-function research, writing in part:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p><em>Along with support for this research comes a responsibility to ensure that the information is used for good. Safeguarding against the potential accidental release or deliberate misuse of laboratory pathogens is imperative. The engineered viruses developed in the ferret experiments are maintained in high-security laboratories. The scientists, journal editors and funding agencies involved are working together to ensure that access to specific information that could be used to create dangerous pathogens is limited to those with an established and legitimate need to know.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul and Fauci have sparred before, with\u00a0Fauci recently accusing Paul and Rep.
