The day is typically marked by religious events and gatherings at the U.S. Capitol building as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldayofprayer.org\/about\">proclamation<\/a> from the president, the National Day of Prayer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldayofprayer.org\/faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> reads.<\/p>\n<p>A post shared on Facebook May 6, this year\u2019s National Day of Prayer, says: \u201cFirst time in 70 years the National Day Of Prayer was not observed in our nations (<em>sic<\/em>) capital!Are you awake yet!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While there was no in-person prayer service held at the U.S. Capitol building, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscp.gov\/visiting-capitol-hill\/visitor-information\">closed<\/a> due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year, Biden still observed the National Day of Prayer. There was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unionspringsherald.com\/news\/article_15a46e64-8fcf-11ea-a0e0-1360789b4a9a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no in-person prayer service<\/a> at the Capitol building last year either, and former President Donald Trump instead held a celebration in the Rose Garden, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/07\/politics\/trump-national-day-of-prayer-coronavirus\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, a <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5951502\/joe-biden-catholic-church\/\">practicing Catholic<\/a>, issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/05\/05\/a-proclamation-on-national-day-of-prayer\/\">proclamation<\/a> on May 5 saying the National Day of Prayer would be observed on May 6. <span><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/06\/25\/fact-check-nascar-eliminate-pre-race-prayers-military-flyovers-national-anthem\/\">(RELATED: Did NASCAR Eliminate Pre-Race Prayers, Military Flyovers And National Anthem Performances?)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 6, 2021, as a National Day of Prayer,\u201d reads Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/05\/05\/a-proclamation-on-national-day-of-prayer\/\">proclamation<\/a>, in part. \u201cI invite the citizens of our Nation to give thanks, in accordance with their own faiths and consciences, for our many freedoms and blessings, and I join all people of faith in prayers for spiritual guidance, mercy, and protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden also participated in a broadcast from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pray\/videos\/188882286388727\">Pray.com<\/a>, saying he was praying for the end of the coronavirus pandemic. The National Day of Prayer Task Force <a href=\"https:\/\/missionsbox.org\/press-releases\/national-day-prayer-may-6-2021\/\">broadcasted its event live<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumofthebible.org\/\">Museum of the Bible<\/a>\u00a0in Washington D.C., further proving the day was observed in the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldayofprayer.org\/staff\">Dion Elmore<\/a>, the vice-president of marketing and public relations for the National Day of Prayer Task Force, confirmed in an email to Check Your Fact that the post\u2019s claim is false.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden issued a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/05\/05\/a-proclamation-on-national-day-of-prayer\/\">proclamation<\/a>\u00a0for the National Day of Prayer, and the National Day of Prayer was indeed observed in Washington D.C., through both local events and the National Day of Prayer Task Force national broadcast which was live from the Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C. this year,\u201d Elmore said.<\/p>\n<p>The erroneous claim may stem from an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/revmahoney\/status\/1386720220258213895?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 26 tweet<\/a> sent by <a href=\"https:\/\/prayersandaction.com\/founding-signers\/rev-pat-mahoney\/\">Rev. Patrick Mahoney<\/a> that reads, \u201cAfter our permit was denied, for the first time in 70 years, there will be NO PUBLIC witness at the U.S. Capitol Building for the National Day Of Prayer!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mahoney was denied a permit to hold a prayer gathering at the Capitol building on May 6, Christian Headlines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianheadlines.com\/contributors\/milton-quintanilla\/pastor-denied-permit-to-hold-national-day-of-prayer-event-at-the-us-capitol.html\">reported<\/a>.
