Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/GettyImages-1232809102-1200x800-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"  style=\"display:none\"><\/div>\n<p><span>On Monday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki was joined by Homeland Security Advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall to speak on the subject of \u201cthe most significant and successful attack on energy infrastructure we know of in the United States,\u201d the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/most-significant-and-successful-attack-on-energy-infrastructure-in-the-united-states-cyberattack-hits-colonial-pipeline\"><span>cyberattack<\/span><\/a><span> which was launched on the Colonial Pipeline \u2014 the largest refined products pipeline in the country \u2014 last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>On Friday evening, May 7th, Colonial Pipeline reported that its pipeline system had been subject to a ransomware cyberattack.\u00a0 Colonial chose to shut down its pipeline operations as a precautionary measure and to ensure that the ransomware could not migrate from business computer systems to those that control and operate the pipeline.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been in ongoing contact with Colonial, and the President continues to be regularly briefed on the incident and our work,\u201d Sherwood-Randall said during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/05\/10\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-homeland-security-advisor-and-deputy-national-security-advisor-dr-elizabeth-sherwood-randall-and-deputy-national-security-advisor-for-cyber-and-emerging\/\"><span>briefing<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cColonial is currently working with its private cybersecurity consultants to assess potential damage and to determine when it is safe to bring the pipeline back online.\u00a0 Thus far, Colonial has told us that it has not suffered damage and can be brought back online relatively quickly, but that safety is a priority given that it has never before taken the entire pipeline down,\u201d Sherwood-Randall continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Homeland Security advisor proceeded to explain that the White House \u201cconvened an interagency team\u201d in response to the shutdown, which included the Department of Energy, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the Department of Transportation, the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Defense, and \u201cother agencies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Later, Sherwood-Randall addressed growing concerns of gas shortages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cRight now, there is not a supply shortage,\u201d Sherwood-Randall stated. \u201cWe are preparing for multiple possible contingencies \u2014 because that\u2019s our job, especially on the Homeland Security team \u2014 and considering what additional steps may be useful to mitigate any potential disruptions to supply.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sherwood-Randall concluded by noting that the privatization of such infrastructure is a point of weakness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis weekend\u2019s events put the spotlight on the fact that our nation\u2019s critical infrastructure is largely owned and operated by private-sector companies,\u201d Sherwood-Randall argued. \u201cWhen those companies are attacked, they serve as the first line of defense, and we depend on the effectiveness of their defenses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTo improve the cybersecurity of our critical infrastructure, the Biden administration has already launched a high-priority initiative to collaborate with our private-sector partners to harden our defenses and to build our nation\u2019s resilience,\u201d Sherwood-Randall added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/most-significant-and-successful-attack-on-energy-infrastructure-in-the-united-states-cyberattack-hits-colonial-pipeline\">The Daily Wire<\/a> noted this weekend, \u201cif the subsequent outage [following the cyberattack] is not corrected within days, the eastern half of the United States, which reportedly receives 45% of fuel from the pipeline, could see a surge in gas, oil, and diesel prices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOil analyst Andy Lipow said if the shutdown lasted five or six days, price hikes would result, most notably affecting the supply of jet fuel major airports needed to operate,\u201d The Daily Wire added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
