Gavin Newsom (D) extended his emergency drought declaration while adding more regions. On Monday, he expanded the order to nearly 40 counties, including Klamath River Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and Tulare Lake Watershed counties.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom originally issued the emergency declaration in late April, but said this year\u2019s snow-pack didn\u2019t bring enough water to hold the Golden State over. 41 counties in total are now affected by the order, which amounts to around 30 percent of California\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so this drought proclamation should provide us flexibility so to address issues around conveyance,\u201d stated the Democrat governor. \u201cWorking with water agreements, different water agencies, allow us more flexibility at the local and regional basis\u2026allow us some reprieve around secret regulations and permitting resolute permitting issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s not good enough to fix what we have \u2013 we must build the infrastructure for the next century to ensure we can handle the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Today we proposed $5.1 billion for water infrastructure, drought preparedness and response, and water resilience. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CAcomeback?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CAcomeback<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zuJCIRaswB\">pic.twitter.com\/zuJCIRaswB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Office of the Governor of California (@CAgovernor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CAgovernor\/status\/1391877104338309123?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 10, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the meantime, Newsom has been pushing state lawmakers to pass his plan to spend billions of dollars to bolster the state\u2019s water resiliency and infrastructure.
