Cordileone noted that in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sfarchdiocese.org\/documents\/2021\/5\/Pastoral_Letter_LetterSize_0501.pdf\">Before I Formed You In The Womb, I Knew You<\/a>,\u201d he discussed the need for conversations to take place between pastors or bishops and the individual in question \u201cso they can understand the error of their ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These conversations help the individual understand church teaching, Cordileone said, avoiding \u201csuch a situation\u201d where someone like Pelosi must be publicly denied communion.<\/p>\n<p>The archbishop previously wrote that the \u201csad truth\u201d is that these private conversations often make no change, \u201cthus leaving it easy for the individual to continue participating fully in the life of the Church\u201d and causing scandal to other Catholics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we are dealing with public figures and public examples of cooperation in moral evil, this correction can also take the public form of exclusion from the reception of Holy Communion,\u201d Cordileone wrote. \u201cWhen other avenues are exhausted, the only recourse a pastor has left is the public medicine of temporary exclusion from the Lord\u2019s Table. This is a bitter medicine, but the gravity of the evil of abortion can sometimes warrant it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have had such conversations with Speaker Pelosi, she knows that I stand by Church teaching, and I know she\u2019s respectful enough not to do anything so provocative,\u201d the archbishop said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the case of President Biden or any other prominent Catholic, I think what I would do is if I knew that they were coming into the area here and planned to attend mass, I would try to have those conversations as well ahead of time,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi has previously discussed whether the church gives her any \u201cdifficulties\u201d about receiving communion despite her pro-abortion stances, describing herself as a \u201cregular communicant.\u201d<\/p>\n<div readability=\"7.3093525179856\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"10.05035971223\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">\u201cI think some of it is regional,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/religion\/2021\/05\/02\/pelosi-archbishop-communion\/\">said in a 2018 interview<\/a>. \u201cIt depends on the bishop in a certain region. Fortunately, for me it has not \u2014 Communion has not been withheld and I\u2019m a regular communicant so that would be a severe blow to me if that were the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Addressing concerns from clergy who <a href=\"https:\/\/sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com\/2021\/05\/09\/san-francisco-archbishop-san-diego-bishop-spar-over-biden-receiving-communion\/\">say<\/a> that Biden should not be denied communion, Cordileone noted that Biden presents the \u201cproblem of scandal\u201d since he is one of the most powerful world leaders and is a pro-abortion Catholic.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/28\/catholic-vote-sba-list-biden-extremism-abortion-100-days\/\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Catholic, Pro-Life Campaigns Highlight \u2018Unprecedented Abortion Extremism\u2019 Of Biden\u2019s First 100 Days)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless there is some kind of a public backtrack, or retraction better yet, they\u2019re still advocating for something that is evil,\u201d the archbishop said of high profile pro-abortion Catholics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t say anything, if we don\u2019t speak out, then we are also culpable,\u201d Cordileone told the DCNF. \u201cI tremble at the responsibility that God has given me. In my letter I try to lay out clearly the church teaching so there can be no disagreement about church teaching, I try and make it as clear and concise as possible. When it comes to pastoral application of church teaching, that\u2019s where pastoral discretion is needed, different judgements might be made by different bishops in different situations.
