Ron DeSantis signed a bill Friday that further banned local governments from imposing gun restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2021\/1884\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SB 1884<\/a>,\u00a0will expand an earlier law that can force local governments to pay up to $100,000 in damages if they are sued for imposing gun regulations. The bill is set to take effect July 1.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation was <a href=\"https:\/\/flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2021\/1884\/?Tab=BillHistory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed<\/a> by the Republican-controlled legislature in April. Florida has banned local governments from passing regulations that are stricter than state laws regarding firearms since <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Firearms_preemption_conflicts_between_state_and_local_governments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1987<\/a>. The law was strengthened in 2011 and the First District Court of Appeal upheld the law in April, reversing an earlier court\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Local officials challenged the law after the Parkland School Shooting that left 17 dead, but were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys for the local governments have since filed a motion requesting the Supreme Court be sent the key issues in the case, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/local\/2021\/05\/10\/gov-ron-desantis-signs-bill-limiting-local-governments-to-impose-gun-regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click Orlando<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/06\/texas-senate-passes-bill-carry-handguns-without-license\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Texas Senate Passes Bill To Allow The Carrying Of Handguns Without A License)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7188569\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"37\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7188569\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7188569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/GettyImages-1311497712-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"MIAMI, FLORIDA - APRIL 08: Florida Gov. (Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Under the 2011 version, local governments could be forced to pay up to $100,000 in fees and damages and local officials could face $5,000 fines and possible removal from office, <a href=\"https:\/\/miami.cbslocal.com\/2021\/05\/10\/florida-gov-ron-desantis-signs-bill-banning-local-gun-regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBS Miami<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The new law builds upon the older legislation to allow people to sue for \u201cunwritten\u201d policies that violate the gun-regulation rule and also says local governments could still be responsible for covering fees and damages if they change gun-related policies after a lawsuit is filed, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Republican State Rep. Cord Byrd who sponsored the bill in the House said the measure protected the Second Amendment, according to CBS Miami.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI brought this forward so that local governments will once and for all stop violating the rights and stop wasting taxpayer money,\u201d Byrd reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller has reached out to DeSantis\u2019 office but did not receive a response at the time of publication.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Florida Gov.
