Companies have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/07\/unemployment-benefits-job-openings-coronavirus-labor-department\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">struggled<\/a> to hire workers despite coronavirus restrictions relaxing across the country, and some experts have placed the blame for people not wanting to return to work on generous <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/04\/coronavirus-pandemic-unemployment-insurance-department-labor-inspector-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unemployment<\/a> benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does the White House know that people aren\u2019t just choosing not to apply for jobs because the extra unemployment benefits are so good?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Psaki pointed to data that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had discussed and said that the evidence did not show that unemployment was a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/09\/gina-raimondo-unemployment-jobs-neel-kashkari\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">significant factor<\/a> influencing whether or not people rejoined the workforce. Schools reopening has an impact,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut there is also the need to pay a livable, working wage. And that\u2019s one of the reasons the president will talk about that this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as Bank of America economists who were cited in a Bloomberg story say, anyone making less than $32,000 a year is better off financially just taking the unemployment benefits,\u201d Doocy said. \u201cSo is the White House creating an incentive just to stay home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Psaki pushed back, saying that the majority of economists do not believe unemployment is a major factor driving the low amount of people who have returned to the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, again, the majority of economists internally and externally at the White House don\u2019t feel that unemployment insurance \u2013 something that was done at a time to help unemployed people get through a very difficult economic downturn during a pandemic \u2013 is a major driver in our unemployment data,\u201d the press secretary said. \u201cThat there are other factors, bigger factors, that were contributing, have been contributing, to the numbers we saw on Friday. That\u2019s what we\u2019re working to address.
