The claim may stem from a popular online petition asking Amazon to accept Dogecoin as payment.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dogecoin has increased in value in recent months and briefly reached an all-time high of 69 cents on May 5, a 12,000 percent increase since Jan. 1, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/05\/05\/how-much-a-1000-dollar-investment-in-dogecoin-is-worth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a>. In recent days, some social media users have claimed Amazon is now accepting Dogecoin as a form of payment.<\/p>\n<p>There is no evidence, however, Amazon added Dogecoin as an acceptable payment method on its website. Had Amazon made such a decision, media outlets almost certainly would have reported on it, yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=amazon+dogecoin&#038;source=lnms&#038;tbm=nws&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwjhqOO3krjwAhVJn-AKHTexCwwQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&#038;biw=1440&#038;bih=821\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">none have<\/a> done so.\u00a0Check Your Fact also checked Amazon\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/help\/customer\/display.html?nodeId=GFBWMNXEPYVJAY9A\">Payment Methods<\/a>\u201d page, which lists the way Amazon customers can purchase items, but cryptocurrency, such as Dogecoin and Bitcoin, is not listed as a form of payment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/rnicoll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Nicoll<\/a>, a developer for Dogecoin, told <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fact-checking-196022114861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Associated Press<\/a> (AP) that there was no deal between Amazon and Dogecoin to allow the cryptocurrency as payment. Amazon spokesperson Nell Rona also confirmed to Check Your Fact that the e-commerce company does not accept cryptocurrency as payment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Amazon does not accept cryptocurrency,\u201d Rona said via email. \u201cYes, customers can purchase Amazon gift cards using bitcoin from a small number of authorized resellers.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2019\/02\/06\/fact-check-eric-trump-amazon-e-verify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Eric Trump Claims Amazon Doesn\u2019t Use E-Verify For Most Of Its Employees)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some authorized resellers of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.bitpay.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360024780212-How-to-Purchase-a-Gift-Card\">Amazon<\/a>\u00a0gift cards, such as BitPay, accept Bitcoin and other digital currencies as payment. BitPay, for example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20210304005739\/en\/BitPay-Lets-Merchants-Accept-Dogecoin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> March 4 that it will now accept Dogecoin as payment. Cryptocurrency paid to these resellers is converted into \u201clocal currency,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bitpay.com\/online-payments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BitPay\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBitPay displays the invoice for your customer. Your customer pays the BitPay invoice at a locked-in exchange rate,\u201d reads the BitPay website. \u201cBitPay converts the customer\u2019s payment into your local currency. BitPay initiates a bank settlement to you the next business day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The claim may stem from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/jeff-bezos-doge4amazon-accept-dogecoin-as-a-payment-method?recruiter=1197810635&#038;recruited_by_id=02e33b00-a69b-11eb-86da-9383c4ba1bf8&#038;share_bandit_exp=message-12463492-en-US&#038;share_bandit_var=v3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">petition<\/a> on Change.org asking Amazon to accept Dogecoin as a form of payment. The petition, which was started four years ago, recently began gaining traction and had collected 200,000 signatures in late April, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/petition-asking-amazon-accept-dogecoin-payment-hits-200000-signatures-1586751\">Newsweek<\/a>.
