Experts had expected 1 million new jobs and a modest decline in unemployment. <\/span><span>CNBC\u2019s Steve Liesman<\/span><span> initially thought the numbers \u2014 which other media outlets described as \u201c<\/span><span>a huge letdown<\/span><span>\u201d and \u201c<\/span><span>way worse than expected<\/span><span>\u201d<\/span><span> \u2014 were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rncresearch\/status\/1390675402666938368\"><span>erroneous<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s not that there aren\u2019t jobs; it\u2019s that people aren\u2019t filling them,\u201d Ruhle said on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cCraig Melvin Reports,\u201d which follows her own show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many economists believe the glut of job vacancies exists because Congress voted to pay an extra $300 a week in unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic, a decision that for many Americans made government support more profitable than income from a job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe disappointing jobs report makes it clear that paying people not to work is dampening what should be a stronger jobs market,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamber.com\/press-release\/us-chamber-calls-ending-300-weekly-supplemental-unemployment-benefits-address-labor\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> Neil Bradley, executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. \u201cBased on the Chamber\u2019s analysis, the $300 benefit results in approximately one in four recipients taking home more in unemployment than they earned working.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But Ruhle dismissed those concerns, speculating that \u201cthe government chose that amount of money because, most likely, it\u2019s what people need to get by.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are seeing some business advocacy groups urging, saying, \u2018See, it\u2019s that expanded unemployment. People are getting paid so much, they\u2019re staying home,\u2019\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut the other side of that coin, Craig, is that this could be the wage pressure that we need to finally raise just for low wage workers. Remember, Democrats wanted to raise the federal minimum wage. They didn\u2019t get that through,\u201d she continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>House Democrats initially included a provision to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour in President Joe Biden\u2019s COVID-19 relief bill, but it was later stripped out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNow you\u2019re seeing wage pressure. All sorts of businesses are forced to pay more to get people back,\u201d Ruhle said. \u201cAll of this may expose how we need to change how we compensate people. \u2026 And so now they need to solve for all this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ruhle, in essence, called for something like a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/cloward-piven-and-the-fundamental-transformation-of-america\"><span>Cloward-Piven Strategy<\/span><\/a><span> for the minimum wage hikes: Unemployment rates will continue to climb until Congress passes legislation to \u201csolve\u201d the problem it created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of course, raising the minimum wage will destroy jobs and opportunity, not create them. In February, the Congressional Budget Office said raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour would cost the U.S. economy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/congressional-budget-office-minimum-wage-hike-would-cost-1-4-million-jobs\"><span>1.4 million<\/span><\/a><span> jobs. That\u2019s a significant lower estimate than the CBO offered in 2019, when it said passing the same legislation would cause the economy to shed as many as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/heres-how-many-jobs-would-be-lost-15-minimum-wage-amanda-prestigiacomo\"><span>3.7 million<\/span><\/a><span> American jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One of President Barack Obama\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/faculty\/jason-furman\"><span>top economic advisers<\/span><\/a><span>, Harvard economic professor Jason Furman, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/MSNBCW_20210506_130000_Stephanie_Ruhle_Reports\/start\/1983.8\/end\/2025.8\"><span>schooled<\/span><\/a><span> Ruhle on the matter on her own show on Thursday, May 6:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"20\">\n<p><span>Ruhle: <\/span><i><span>I want to go back to worker pay, for businesses that say they can\u2019t find employees, and they can\u2019t afford to pay people more. If you can\u2019t afford to pay people a living wage, isn\u2019t there an argument to be made those businesses should go out of business?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span>Furman: <\/span><i><span>I don\u2019t think so. You know, the worst thing is a business to pay somebody zero dollars. Any business in the country is allowed to pay zero dollars and allowed to not hire people. If a business is offering job opportunities to workers \u2013 many of whom have, you know, lower levels of skill, [and] no one else wants to employ them \u2014 I think that\u2019s a great thing, and we want those businesses.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Still, Ruhle doubled down on Friday. \u201cRather than end the $300 expanded UI kicker, why not RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE. People shouldn\u2019t make more on unemployment than from work\u2026so PAY THEM MORE TO WORK,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SRuhle\/status\/1390675608066211840\"><span>tweeted<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cIf businesses can\u2019t afford to pay a living wage, maybe their business model is failing.<\/span><span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SRuhle\/status\/1390675608066211840\"><b>https:\/\/twitter.com\/SRuhle\/status\/1390675608066211840<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>President Joe Biden agreed, saying in a speech on Friday that the April job numbers \u201cshow we\u2019re on the right track.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The enhanced unemployment benefits had no \u201cmeasurable\u201d impact on increasing unemployment, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He added that the higher-than-expected unemployment numbers on his watch prove the need for his free-spending economic agenda to \u201cbuild back better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A higher minimum wage will be part of that conversation, as it enjoys substantial support within the administration. As a presidential candidate, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said anyone who opposes raising the minimum wage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.acton.org\/archives\/110724-is-pete-buttigieg-right-that-opposing-a-15-minimum-wage-taunts-god.html\"><span>\u201ctaunts\u201d God<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Ben Johnson is the Media Reporter at The Daily Wire.
