it was a huge challenge,\u2019\u201d Psaki told Axelrod.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finding alternatives to the term \u201ccrisis\u201d has marked Psaki\u2019s tenure as the Biden-Harris administration\u2019s most conspicuous public spokesperson during one of the worst border crises in modern history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Illegal border crossings have skyrocketed since Biden revoked President Donald Trump\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2019\/01\/24\/migrant-protection-protocols\"><span>Migrant Protection Protocols<\/span><\/a><span>(MPP), which encouraged migrants to wait in other countries while they applied for asylum status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The number of illegal immigrants arrested by the <\/span><span>United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/southwest-land-border-encounters\"><span>more than doubled<\/span><\/a><span> since Joe Biden\u2019s inauguration in January. The CBP <\/span><span>arrested 172,331 illegal immigrants in March \u2014 including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/crisis-record-numer-of-migrants-taken-into-custody-at-southern-border-in-march-highest-number-of-child-migrants-ever-recorded\"><span>19,000 children<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 up 71% in one month. Total border crossings in March reached the highest level in 15 years, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/march-border-crossings\/2021\/04\/02\/150ee61c-93b3-11eb-9af7-fd0822ae4398_story.html\"><span>according<\/span><\/a><span> to The Washington Post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Although the Biden administration has tried to suppress photos of unaccompanied minors being held in overcrowded facilities, images have emerged of children unable to observe social distancing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has admitted illegal immigrants were released into the United States <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dhs-secretary-admits-illegal-immigrants-were-released-into-u-s-without-getting-covid-tests\"><span>without being tested<\/span><\/a><span>, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/asylum-seekers-test-positive-for-covid-after-being-released-into-u-s-by-border-patrol-nbc-news\"><span>after testing positive<\/span><\/a><span> for COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The American people may also have gotten the impression that the uncontrolled flow of undocumented immigrants across the Southern border is a crisis from <\/span><span>border state Democrats, who have been outspoken about the damage a virtually open border has had on their communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cT<\/span><span>he reality is, is that this is a crisis<\/span><span>,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrat-sen-kyrsten-sinema-unloads-on-biden-we-all-know-that-this-is-a-crisis-bold-action-needed-now\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., on Thursday<\/span><span>. \u201cWe all know it.\u201d Her colleague, Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/04\/29\/mark-kelly-biden-immigration-485054\"><span>stated<\/span><\/a><span> in late April that the current immigration situation amounts to \u201c<\/span><span>a crisis on the border in Arizona and Texas.\u201d<\/span><span> And earlier this month Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Tex., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/there-is-a-border-crisis-texas-democrat-slams-biden-for-failing-to-talk-about-the-border-during-his-congressional-address\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cThere is a border crisis, no ifs about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cuellar announced that more than 15,000 illegal aliens had missed their court date under the Biden administration\u2019s renewed catch-and-release policy, which amounts to a version of the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/border-democrat-biden-admins-use-of-the-honor-system-means-more-than-15000-illegal-aliens-have-no-court-dates\"><span>honors system<\/span><\/a><span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Psaki has attempted to blunt the impact of these stories during press briefings. She <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-psaki-dodges-question-about-smugglers-throwing-small-children-over-border-wall\"><span>refused to comment<\/span><\/a><span> on video footage of human smugglers, known as coyotes, appearing to throw a three-year-old child and a five-year-old child over a border wall. On April 1, Psaki told Fox News reporter Peter Doocy, \u201c[O]ur focus is on sending a clear message to smugglers \u2014 to the region \u2013 that this is not the time to come.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She did not specify the right time for human smugglers to come to America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rather than a \u201ccrisis,\u201d she has used the blander phrase \u201cchallenges on the border.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But Psaki has not always been consistent on the matter herself. During her March 18 briefing, Psaki discussed the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/psaki-calls-situation-on-the-border-a-crisis-later-walks-it-back-when-reporter-points-out-her-remark\"><span>crisis on the border<\/span><\/a><span>.\u201d When a reporter asked about her use of the term, Psaki immediately walked it back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>President Biden, too, talked about \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-finally-admits-that-the-border-crisis-that-has-erupted-under-his-presidency-is-a-crisis\"><span>the crisis<\/span><\/a><span> that ended up on the border with young people\u201d on April 17. The White House later told the media that Biden\u2019s remarks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/white-house-biden-calling-the-border-crisis-a-crisis-does-not-reflect-view-of-the-administration\"><span>do not reflect the official position<\/span><\/a><span> of the Biden-Harris administration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the interview with Axelrod, Psaki downplayed the importance of immigration to the American people, saying most have other priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat percentage of the public is focused on the border? A much smaller percentage than who\u2019s focused on the pandemic and the economy,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But a recent Pew Research Center found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalism.org\/2021\/04\/28\/at-100-day-mark-coverage-of-biden-has-been-slightly-more-negative-than-positive-varied-greatly-by-outlet-type\/\"><span>43% of Americans<\/span><\/a><span> say the media have not spent enough time covering immigration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Ben Johnson is the Media Reporter at The Daily Wire.
