If Starbucks did decide to move forward with severing ties with Facebook, \u201cit would be one of the largest companies ever\u201d to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarbucks is in the process of evaluating their organic presence on FB, and whether they should continue to have a presence on the platform at all,\u201d an employee at Facebook told colleagues last week. \u201cAnytime [sic] they post (organically) in regards to social issues or their mission &#038; values work (e.g. BLM, LGBTQ, sustainability\/climate change, etc.) they are overwhelmed by negative\/insensitive, hate speech related comments on their posts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The coffee company\u2019s social media team \u201chas struggled to moderate hateful responses and is unable to disable comments on their page\u201d and had a number of questions about Facebook\u2019s algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile some changes have been implemented, we believe more can be done to create welcoming and inclusive online communities,\u201d Starbucks spokesperson Sanja Gould said in a statement to Buzzfeed. \u201cWe work collaboratively with all companies we do business with to ensure any advertising done on our behalf is in alignment with our brand standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Facebook spokesperson Dani Lever defended the company, saying their team provides clients with \u201ctools to limit this content from appearing on partners\u2019 pages including ways for brands to control those who can comment on their posts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur teams work with our clients around the world on various issues and as this post shows we are working with them to keep hate off of their pages,\u201d Lever explained.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks has repeatedly come under fire for their pro-Black Lives Matter and anti-law enforcement stances.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, the company created Black Lives Matter shirts, pins, and nametags that employees could purchase, just weeks after backlash for employees targeting law enforcement.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.6635514018692\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Black Lives Matter. We hear you. Black Lives Matter. That is a fact and will never change,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/press\/2020\/standing-together-against-racial-injustice\/?utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=blacklivesmatter&#038;utm_term=post&#038;utm_content=marketing-social\">press release<\/a> said. \u201cThis movement is a catalyst for change, and right now, it\u2019s telling us a lot of things need to be addressed so we can make space to heal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After intense scrutiny, Starbucks flipped the script and changed course, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/starbucks-flips-stance-on-black-lives-matter-apparel-at-work-previews-new-t-shirts\">The Daily Wire<\/a> previously reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack lives matter and Starbucks is committed to doing our part in ending systemic racism,\u201d Starbucks said in a statement at the time. \u201cAs a company, Starbucks leaders continue to listen to partners (employees) about how they want to take a stand for justice, while proudly wearing the green apron and standing united together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks earlier, in mid-December, two uniformed sheriff\u2019s deputies in Southern California were denied service. According to Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, the officers were \u201ccompletely ignored because they were in uniform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey tried to get served, they asked if anyone was going to help them, they were laughed at, they were completely ignored \u2014 obviously ignored to where other patrons knew they were being ignored,\u201d Bianco said.<\/p>\n<p>The pair ended up leaving and getting coffee elsewhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/starbucks-apologizes-after-police-officers-allegedly-denied-service-in-california-starbucks\/\">CBS News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks was forced to apologize in summer of 2019 after six Tempe, Arizona, police officers were asked to leave one of their stores. Employees asked the officers to leave because a customer felt unsafe. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2019\/07\/07\/barista-asked-police-leave-because-guest-felt-uncomfortable-starbucks-has-apologized\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"22\">\n<p><em>According to the association, the officers were standing with their coffees before their shift when a barista told them their presence was making a customer feel unsafe. The barista \u2014 who knew one of the officers, a regular customer, by name \u2014 requested that they \u201cmove out of the customer\u2019s line of sight or to leave,\u201d the association said in a statement posted to Twitter on Friday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDisappointed, the officers did in fact leave,\u201d the group wrote, adding, \u201cWhile the barista was polite, making such a request at all was offensive. Unfortunately, such treatment has become all too common in 2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2019, an Oklahoma police officer stopped at the coffee company during his Thanksgiving Day shift. When he picked up his drink, the word \u201cPig\u201d was written on it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cop-working-on-thanksgiving-goes-to-starbucks-for-coffee-to-thank-dispatchers-cup-gets-labeled-pig\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported. Starbucks issued a statement apologizing for their employee\u2019s conduct and the Barista and manager were eventually fired, <a href=\"https:\/\/ktul.com\/news\/local\/police-chief-wants-starbucks-worker-rehired-after-pig-labels-controversy\">KTUL-TV<\/a> reported.
