The Georgia-based company said it shut down the pipelines as a precaution and has engaged a third-party cybersecurity firm to investigate the incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdministration officials said they believed the attack was the act of a criminal group, rather than a nation seeking to disrupt critical infrastructure in the United States. But at times, such groups have had loose affiliations with foreign intelligence agencies and have operated on their behalf,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/08\/us\/cyberattack-colonial-pipeline.html\">The New York Times<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Chapple from University of Notre Dame\u00b4s Mendoza College of Business, a former computer scientist with the National Security Agency, said, \u201cThe attacks were extremely sophisticated and they were able to defeat some pretty sophisticated security controls, or the right degree of security controls weren\u00b4t in place,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9558509\/Fears-gas-price-surge-ransomware-attack-shuts-Americas-key-fuel-pipeline.html\">The Daily Mail<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Oil analyst Andy Lipow said if the shutdown lasted five or six days, price hikes would result, most notably affecting the supply of jet fuel major airports needed to operate.<\/p>\n<p>Rob Lee of the cybersecurity firm Drago noted that if the attack only affected Colonial\u2019s business computer systems, \u201cI think it\u2019s going to be relatively short-lived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at Gas Buddy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/gas-price-spike-feared-ransomware-attack-shuts-colonial-pipeline-network-1589822\">told<\/a> Newsweek, \u201cThe challenges brought on by the Colonial Pipeline shut down would likely not appear for several days or longer. My guess is they\u2019ll be able to restart the pipeline before any major issues develop. This should NOT be a pricing event- but this may be a supply event. By \u2018pricing event\u2019 I meant not one motorists will generally \u2018see\u2019 that is, not an overnight spike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColonial Pipeline\u00a0announced Saturday morning that it\u2019s working to restore operations and hired a third-party cybersecurity firm to investigate the targeted ransomware attack,\u201d Newsweek added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe private cybersecurity firm FireEye said it\u2019s been hired to manage the incident response investigation,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/major-us-pipeline-halts-operations-after-ransomware-attack\/600055028\/\">Star Tribune<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday. Colonial issued a statement saying that the \u201cincident involves ransomware\u201d , \u201cColonial Pipeline is taking steps to understand and resolve the issue.
