Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez requested earmarks for two New York hospitals that perform abortions.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez requested two earmarks totaling $3,393,839 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nychealthandhospitals.org\/elmhurst\/our-services\/womens-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York City Hospital\/Elmhurst<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nychealthandhospitals.org\/jacobi\/our-services\/womens-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York City Hospital\/Jacobi<\/a>, both of which list \u201celective pregnancy termination\u201d as a service that they provide. Jacobi Hospital\u2019s official site explains that \u201cNYC Health + Hospitals facilities offer comprehensive and confidential care for people of all genders that include contraceptive counseling, management of pregnancy loss, and elective pregnancy termination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez did not immediately respond to Daily Caller\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez <a href=\"https:\/\/ocasio-cortez.house.gov\/services\/community-project-funding-fy-22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requested<\/a> $3 million for Elmhurst hospital for renovations of \u201cits Obstetrical Inpatient facilities in order to provide a more modern, safe, and comfortable family-centered environment.\u201d She filed the request jointly with Democratic New York Rep. (Photo by ANGELA WEISS\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Meng did not immediately respond to Daily Caller\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez also <a href=\"https:\/\/ocasio-cortez.house.gov\/sites\/ocasio-cortez.house.gov\/files\/documents\/Stand-Up-to-Violence-Member-Certification.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requested<\/a> $393,839 so that Jacobi hospital can \u201cdeploy outreach workers to respond to shootings to prevent retaliation and to assist family members of those who have been injured or killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar programs have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/15\/what-it-actually-means-to-defund-the-police.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proposed<\/a> by activists, including <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/19\/squad-members-defund-police-spent-thousands-private-security-protect-themselves-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-ilhan-omar-ayanna-pressley-cori-bush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> herself, as an alternative to a regular police force. She filed the request jointly with Democratic New York Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/bowman.house.gov\/cpf-proposals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamaal Bowman<\/a>, public records show.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman did not immediately respond to Daily Caller\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Both hospitals are operated by the New York City Health + Hospitals Corporation, a public benefit corporation controlled by New York state. It <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/hhc\/downloads\/pdf\/hhc-road-ahead-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">operates<\/a> 11 hospitals within New York City. The state of New York has provided public <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/01\/23\/abortion-roe-v-wade-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">funding<\/a> for abortions since 2019. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/01\/23\/world-trade-center-lit-pink-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: World Trade Center Lit Up In Pink To Celebrate Abortion Bill)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration ended a Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/14\/100-republicans-letter-marsha-blackburn-joe-biden-hhs-secretary-xavier-becerra-urging-against-federal-funding-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rule<\/a> prohibiting organizations that perform abortions from receiving Title X funds from the Department of Health and Human Services. In practice, the rule required organizations to separate into two legal entities, one that provides abortion and one that does not, in order to continue receiving federal funding.<\/p>\n<p>The American Rescue Plan, passed in a pair of party-line votes, allows abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, to access stimulus money. Republican Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/10\/republicans-pro-life-covid-bill-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">described<\/a> the use of the reconciliation process to expand abortion funding as \u201ctotally unprecedented\u201d and \u201cunconscionable.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/21\/biden-mexico-city-policy-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Biden Will Revoke Mexico City Policy Preventing Federal Funds For Abortions Abroad, Fauci Says)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earmarks are line items inserted into bills that direct money towards a specific recipient. By directing spending toward a specific Congress member\u2019s district, they can be used to gain a reluctant member\u2019s support for a piece of legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Both parties in the House of Representatives voted to bring back earmarks, which were banned in 2011. Republicans in the Senate formally do not allow earmarks, although six Republican senators have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/05\/swamp-politics-senate-republicans-earmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> that they will request earmarks.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the practice say that earmarks are <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/17\/congress-earmarks-cagw-sessions-roy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wasteful<\/a> and are used to push through unpopular legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents say that earmarks are necessary for passing important legislation.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to promote transparency and crackdown on corruption, congressional leaders require any member who requests an earmark to make the request publicly available and certify that neither the member nor his or her immediate family will benefit from the funding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York Democratic Rep.
