Ron DeSantis signed into law an election reform bill Thursday that he said safeguards elections. Some, however, are now claiming the new law amounts to voter suppression.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Brigham, the president of the League of Women Voters of Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/lwvfl.org\/league-of-women-voters-of-florida-and-others-sue-to-stop-floridas-voter-suppression-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a> the law \u201cun-American.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legislation has a deliberate and disproportionate impact on elderly voters, voters with disabilities, students and communities of color. It\u2019s a despicable attempt by a one-party-ruled legislature to choose who can vote in our state and who cannot. It\u2019s undemocratic, unconstitutional, and un-American.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/225egw40g2k99t0ud3pbf2ct-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/SB-90-veto-letter-5.5.21-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> to DeSantis sent before the bill <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/30\/florida-voting-legislation-mail-in-drop-box-ron-desantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was signed<\/a>, more than 20 local and national activist groups, including the NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union, encouraged DeSantis to veto the bill, claiming it sought \u201cto silence voters\u2019 voices based on what they look like or where they come from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/lwvfl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1-0-Complaint-05-06-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lawsuit<\/a> filed by a collection of activist groups including the League of Women Voters of Florida alleged the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2021\/90\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new legislation<\/a> \u201cis crafted to and will operate to make it more difficult for certain types of voters to participate in the state\u2019s elections.\u201d They claimed those disenfranchised by the bill included \u201cvoters who generally wish to vote with a vote-by-mail ballot,\u201d young voters, minorities, and senior citizens.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"12.124600638978\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">???? SEE YOU IN COURT!<\/p>\n<p>We are joining our folks at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LWVFlorida?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LWVFlorida<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ActiveRetirees?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ActiveRetirees<\/a>, and individual voters in the state of Florida in filing a lawsuit against all 67 Florida counties challenging the voter suppression law, SB 90!<\/p>\n<p>Learn more:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/p5Vn2YPvmp\">https:\/\/t.co\/p5Vn2YPvmp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Black Voters Matter (@BlackVotersMtr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlackVotersMtr\/status\/1390303031175045121?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One reason the suit cites as evidence of voter suppression is the law allegedly \u201cseverely reduces access to vote-by-mail drop boxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the letter sent to DeSantis, activists groups say \u201cBlack and brown voters work longer hours and live in larger households, making changes such as cutting out 24-hour drop boxes and limiting help with ballot delivery into proportionately greater barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The law requires an election supervisor to designate drop box locations at least 30 days before an election and prohibits the locations from being changed after their initial designation. The drop boxes must be placed \u201cat the main office of the supervisor, at each permanent branch office of the supervisor, and at each early voting site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The law notes, however, drop boxes may only be used during early voting hours and must be monitored by an employee of the supervisor\u2019s office. The drop-boxes that will not be open 24\/7.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qZS8Vpx7prc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fox News<\/a> on Thursday that he isn\u2019t a fan of drop boxes and that \u201cthey need to be monitored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t just leave these boxes out where there\u2019s no supervision,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The new law prohibits \u201ccertain solicitation of voters at drop box locations,\u201d and increases the \u201cno-solicitation zone surrounding a drop box location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislation explicitly states drop boxes have to be placed in locations that all voters have equal access. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/31\/georgia-voting-bill-absentee-voting-id-requirement-food-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Georgia\u2019s New Voting Law \u2013 Myths And Facts)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrop boxes must be geographically located so as to provide all voters in the county with an equal opportunity to cast a ballot, insofar as is practicable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new law also bans so-called ballot harvesting, which the suit alleges amounts to voter suppression because organizations and volunteers cannot help voters return their mail-in ballots.<\/p>\n<p>Ballot harvesting is the practice of collecting absentee ballots from a voter\u2019s home and dropping them off at a voting location. The text prohibits any person from \u201cdistributing, ordering, requesting, collecting, delivering, or otherwise physically possessing more than two vote-by-mail ballots of other electors per election, not including immediate family members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An immediate family member is defined as a person\u2019s spouse, child, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling.<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honestelections.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Memo-on-Voters-and-Elections.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poll<\/a> by the Honest Elections Project found 62% of voters surveyed think ballot harvesting should be illegal.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason the law has been criticized as suppressing voters is because it bans third parties from \u201cengaging in any activity with the intent to influence or effect of influencing a voter\u201d within 150 feet of a polling location. The suit argues that the so-called \u201cline warming ban\u201d hurts voters who will not be able to obtain assistance while voting or getting food or water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] appears to prevent voters waiting in line to vote from interacting with or receiving food and water from individuals and members of third-party organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislation makes clear that employees or volunteers with the supervisor are permitted to provide \u201cnonpartisan assistance to voters within the no-solicitation zone such as, but not limited to, giving items to voters, or to prohibit exit polling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether the law will prohibit volunteers or employees with the supervisor to distribute items such as food or water.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Florida Gov.
