Examples of teaching \u201cculturally relevant\u201d topics in math class include examining word problems. The framework suggests that fifth-grade math projects should be focused on \u201caccess to water as a human right\u201d and integrate math topics such as volume, capacity, and proportions.\u00a0<\/span><span>When students are learning about statistics and data sets, teachers should ask questions such as, \u201cWho attends your school? Which racial and gender groups are represented? And how does your school data compare to state or national data?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The framework also insists that a portion of math class should be dedicated to raising awareness about gender stereotypes in textbooks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMathematics educators committed to social justice also work to both raise awareness of the ways textbook examples exclude and stereotype certain students and to provide curricular examples that equip students with a tool kit and mindset to combat inequities with mathematics,\u201d the framework reads.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the framework, an example of a word problem investigation should go like this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOne student asks, \u2018Are there word problems that have a male knitting a scarf, cooking, and cleaning?\u2019 and another ponders, \u2018Does the textbook always use girl names for girl stuff and boy names for boy stuff?\u2019 The teacher asks the students, \u2018Why does this matter? Who does this privilege? Who is silenced?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The mathematics framework also recommends including discussion on LGBT issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An example of an alleged math-based discussion on gender reads as follows:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><i><span>Ms. Ross selects three-word problems to connect with the class\u2019s current read-aloud of George, a novel by Alex Gino that shares the story of a 10-year-old transgender fourth-grader and her struggles with acceptance among friends and family. In doing so, the teacher is reflecting the recommendations of California\u2019s Health Framework, which suggests that sensitive discussions of gender are important for students.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>California\u2019s latest framework claims that the emphasis on equity is important as math has a \u201chistory of exclusion and filtering.\u201d The guide claims that math instruction in the U.S. was \u201cinitially structured for a narrow purpose: to prepare privileged, young, white men for entrance into elite colleges.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, from 2004 to 2014, the highest achievers in math were not white people. 32 percent of Asian-American students were in accelerated math programs, compared with eight percent of white students, four percent of black students, and three percent of Hispanic students, according to the framework.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nonetheless, the guide claims that \u201cgirls and Black and Brown children\u201d are told that they are less capable of high-level mathematics \u201ccompared to their White and male counterparts.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the name of equity, the guide also claims that teachers must \u201creject ideas of natural gifts and talents.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>California\u2019s mathematics framework is based on an 82-page guide entitled, \u201cA Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction.\u201d The guide lists the ways in which white supremacy is perpetuated in math class.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhite supremacy culture infiltrates math classrooms in everyday teacher actions,\u201d the equitable math guide reads. \u201cCoupled with the beliefs that underlie these actions, they perpetuate education harm on Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, denying them full access to the world of mathematics.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Examples of classroom actions that allegedly perpetuate white supremacy include asking students to show their work, focusing on getting the right answer, tracking student success, and grading students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/asking-students-to-show-their-work-in-math-class-is-a-form-of-white-supremacy\"><b>Oregon Dept. of Education: Asking Students To \u2018Show Their Work\u2019 In Math Class Is A Form Of White Supremacy\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
