SpaceX and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, announced the rocket\u2019s first successful landing on Twitter, writing \u201cStarship landing nominal!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.5806451612903\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Starship landing nominal!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1390073153347592192?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 5, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The vehicle, known as SN15, is the fifth of SpaceX\u2019s rocket prototypes to attempt a landing, and the first to achieve one successfully. After launch, the rocket traveled around six miles above the surface of the Earth. SpaceX then put the rocket \u201cthrough a series of aerial acrobatics before re-lighting two of its engines and landing it upright back on a landing pad,\u201d according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/05\/05\/tech\/spacex-starship-sn15-test-flight-scn\/index.html\"><span>CNN<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>SN15 is an early version of Starship, which Musk predicts will be the first to carry humans to Mars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe vehicle has several improvements over its predecessors, according to SpaceX. They include upgrades to its hardware, communication and navigation systems, software and its massive engines, which are called Raptor engines,\u201d added CNN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>SpaceX shared a live feed of SN15\u2019s successful flight test on Twitter. After the four-minute mark, SN15 launches. Six minutes later, the rocket can be seen landing safely.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"4.2622950819672\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Live feed of Starship SN15 flight test \u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Hs5C53qBxb\">https:\/\/t.co\/Hs5C53qBxb<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/chZjdVAute\">https:\/\/t.co\/chZjdVAute<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SpaceX (@SpaceX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpaceX\/status\/1390069001892503553?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 5, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cOn Wednesday, May 5, Starship serial number 15 (SN15) successfully completed SpaceX\u2019s fifth high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas,\u201d wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/vehicles\/starship\/index.html\">SpaceX<\/a> on their website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSimilar to previous high-altitude flight tests of <\/span><span>Starship<\/span><span>, SN15 was powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee \u2013 approximately 10 km in altitude. SN15 performed a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent,\u201d they continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Starship prototype descended under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps were actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship\u2019s attitude during flight and enabled precise landing at the intended location,\u201d SpaceX added. \u201cSN15\u2019s Raptor engines reignited as the vehicle performed the landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down for a nominal landing on the pad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese test flights of Starship are all about improving our understanding and development of a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration interplanetary flights, and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond,\u201d the post concluded. \u201cCongratulations to the entire SpaceX team on SN15\u2019s successful flight and landing!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Starship has landed,\u201d John Insprucker, SpaceX principal integration engineer, said during the live broadcast, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/05\/05\/elon-musks-spacex-lands-starship-spacecraft-first-time\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is also due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/report-snl-members-freak-out-about-appearing-with-elon-musk-show-tells-them-they-can-skip-it\"><span>host<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0\u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d this coming weekend.
