Among the revelations, the Times discovered that it was particularly difficult for kids whose parents worked in \u201cessential worker\u201d jobs, including those jobs that require overnight shifts, and that many of the most at-risk students also lack the basic needs associated with virtual learning: time and an internet connection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy one estimate, three million students\u00a0nationwide, roughly the school-age population of Florida, stopped going to classes, virtual or in person, after the\u00a0pandemic began,\u201d the Times reported, citing a study from Bellwether Education Partners.<\/p>\n<p>That <a href=\"https:\/\/bellwethereducation.org\/publication\/missing-margins-estimating-scale-covid-19-attendance-crisis\">study found that<\/a> in major cities \u2014\u00a0 including cities like Los Angeles, California, and Washington, D.C., where teachers unions have pressured school districts to keep learning virtual and teachers out of classrooms \u2014 students \u201cdropped out\u201d of school at an alarming rate<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul readability=\"4.9709418837675\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" readability=\"4.7417840375587\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><em>In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/laschoolboard.org\/sites\/default\/files\/IAU%20Report%202020%200707%20-%20Student%20Engagement%20Online%20During%20Closures.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles<\/a>, 15%-20% of English learners, students in foster care, students with disabilities, and homeless students didn\u2019t access any of the district\u2019s online educational materials from March through May.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" readability=\"1.8375634517766\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><em>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourcommunitynow.com\/news-local\/dc-plans-free-internet-for-25000-low-income-families-this-school-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>, back-to-school family surveys found that 60% of students lacked the devices and 27% lacked the high-speed internet access needed to successfully participate in virtual school.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" readability=\"0.76404494382022\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><em>In Miami-Dade County,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/10\/09\/920316481\/enrollment-is-dropping-in-public-schools-around-the-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">16,000 fewer students<\/a>\u00a0enrolled this fall compared with last year.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Times dug deeper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA disproportionate number of those disengaged students are lower-income Black, Latino, and Native American children who have struggled to keep up in classrooms that are partly or fully remote, for reasons ranging from poor internet service to needing to support their families by working or caring for siblings,\u201d the outlet noted. \u201cMany are homeless or English language learners. Others whose parents work outside the home have struggled in the absence of adult supervision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The losses, the Times admitted, are incalculable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies of how much learning American students have lost in the past year are underway, but the preliminary reports are mostly grim. Even one of the more optimistic surveys found significant losses in math, with a doubling of the proportion of students described as \u2018sliders,\u2019 because they had moved down in their rankings compared with a typical year,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/05\/us\/remote-learning-education-pandemic.html?action=click&#038;module=Top%20Stories&#038;pgtype=Homepage\">the Times noted<\/a>. \u201cAnother\u00a0national study, from the assessment company Curriculum Associates, found a decline of up to 16 percent in the number of elementary school students performing at grade level in math, and up to 10 percent in the number of students performing at grade level in reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, teachers\u2019 unions have been pressing to keep schools closed, claiming, in some instances, that the push to return students to classrooms is \u201cracist.\u201d The Chicago Teachers Union, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chicago-teachers-union-claims-push-to-open-schools-is-racist-and-sexist-sues-to-stop-plan\">as the Daily Wire reported<\/a> earlier this year, effectively called the Chicago Public School system which, in large part, serves minority families, \u201cracist and sexist\u201d in a petition to stop the mayor and the Chicago Public Schools executives from forcing teachers back into classrooms in February.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
