But his latest story just doesn\u2019t add up.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, who has famously ridden the Amtrak rails for years \u2014 all the way back to when he first joined the U.S. Senate in the early 1970s \u2014 recounted a story last week about a train conductor congratulating him for topping 1.5 million miles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I became vice president, one of the Capitol Hill newspapers estimated that I had taken more than 7,000 round trips on Amtrak over my career. I think that\u2019s an exaggeration.\u00a0I\u2019m going to rely on those two conductors \u2026 one of them was a guy named Angelo Negri,\u201d Biden said Friday at an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HII9J921gVs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">event<\/a> to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the national train service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was an article, I guess my\u00a0fourth or fifth year as vice president, saying Biden travels 1.3 million miles on Air Force One [Two]. I used to \u2013 the Secret Service didn\u2019t like it \u2013 but I used to like to take the train home.\u00a0My mom was sick and I used to try to come home almost every weekend as vice president to see her. I got on the train and Angelo Negri came up and he goes, \u2018Joey, baby,\u2019 and he grabbed my cheek like he always did. I thought he was going to get shot. I\u2019m serious. I said, \u2018No, no, he\u2019s a friend.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Joey, what\u2019s the big deal? 1.3 million miles on Air Force Two? Do you know how many miles you traveled on Amtrak?\u2019 I said, \u2018No, Angie, I don\u2019t know.\u2019\u00a0He gave me the calculation and he said you traveled 1.5 million miles on Amtrak. The fact is, I\u2019d probably take Angie\u2019s word before I\u2019d take the word of what the article said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the timeline of events appears to make that tale suspect, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>Biden began his fourth year as former President Barack Obama\u2019s vice president in January 2013, but Negri\u2019s 2004 obituary says he retired from Amtrak in 1993, when Biden was a senator. Plus, Biden\u2019s mother, Catherine Eugenia Finnegan, died in 2010, meaning that she was not alive in Biden\u2019s \u201cfourth or fifth year as vice president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, Biden officially hit 1 million miles on Air Force Two in 2015, a landmark celebrated by his office, Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/biden-amtrak-story-fact-check-conductor-million-miles\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few months ago, Vice President Joe Biden crossed the million-mile mark aboard Air Force Two \u2013 the official plane of the Vice President. \u2026 I wanted to give you a sense of what those more-than 1 million miles have looked like these past seven years,\u201d Biden\u2019s vice presidential photographer David Lienemann <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@VPOTUS44\/this-is-what-more-than-a-million-miles-with-the-vice-president-looks-like-e7bf29a4dd0a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a> in a blog post\u00a0in February 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has told versions of the story before.\u00a0In 2017,\u00a0<a class href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/01\/20\/politics\/biden-train-ride-trnd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a> interviewed Biden and wife Jill on an Amtrak train after Biden left the White House for the last time. He said that Amtrak had \u201ccalculated\u201d that he had made 8,200 round trips totaling more than 2 million miles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hundred and fifty nine miles round trip a day, not everyday, but on average 217 days a year.
