Facebook must complete its review of this matter within six months of the date of this decision. The Board also made policy recommendations for Facebook to implement in developing clear, necessary, and proportionate policies that promote public safety and respect freedom of expression,\u201d the statement introduction concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After outlining a slightly subjective version of events in a section titled, \u201cAbout the case,\u201d the Oversight Board explained its \u201cKey findings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Similar to Twitter\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/twitter-claimed-that-trump-violated-their-policies-the-evidence-says-otherwise\">conclusion<\/a>, Facebook\u2019s Oversight Board \u201cfound that the two posts by Mr. Trump on January 6 severely violated Facebook\u2019s Community Standards and Instagram\u2019s Community Guidelines,\u201d claiming that phrases like \u201cWe love you. You\u2019re very special,\u201d \u201cgreat patriots,\u201d and \u201cremember this day forever\u201d had \u201cviolated Facebook\u2019s rules prohibiting praise or support of people engaged in violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Board found that, in maintaining an unfounded narrative of electoral fraud and persistent calls to action, Mr. Trump created an environment where a serious risk of violence was possible,\u201d the statement continued. Referencing Trump\u2019s \u201chigh level of influence\u201d with \u201c35 million followers on Facebook and 24 million on Instagram,\u201d the Board determined that, \u201cGiven the seriousness of the violations and the ongoing risk of violence, Facebook was justified in suspending Mr. Trump\u2019s accounts on January 6 and extending that suspension on January 7.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the Oversight Board diluted their agreement by noting that \u201cit was not appropriate for Facebook to impose an \u2018indefinite\u2019 suspension.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt is not permissible for Facebook to keep a user off the platform for an undefined period, with no criteria for when or whether the account will be restored,\u201d the statement read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn applying this penalty, Facebook did not follow a clear, published procedure. \u2018Indefinite\u2019 suspensions are not described in the company\u2019s content policies. Facebook\u2019s normal penalties include removing the violating content, imposing a time-bound period of suspension, or permanently disabling the page and account,\u201d the statement continued. The Oversight Board then criticized Facebook for \u201capplying a vague, standardless penalty and then referring this case to the Board to resolve, Facebook seeks to avoid its responsibilities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Board declines Facebook\u2019s request and insists that Facebook apply and justify a defined penalty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Later in the statement, the Oversight Board listed a list of recommendations for Facebook. In addition to asking that Facebook \u201cpublicly explain the rules that it uses when it imposes account-level sanctions against influential users,\u201d the Board discussed issues such as rapid escalation to \u201cspecialized staff who are familiar with the linguistic and political context,\u201d adequate resourcing, and \u201ccomprehensive review of Facebook\u2019s potential contribution to the narrative of electoral fraud and the exacerbated tensions that culminated in the violence in the United States on January 6.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
