The story, \u201cThe Bench\u201d is reportedly about the bond between fathers and their children, and is based on a poem Markle wrote for her husband, Prince Harry, on the occasion of his first Father\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The Bench<\/em>\u00a0started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father\u2019s Day, the month after\u00a0Archie was born,\u201d Markle said in a press release issued Tuesday. \u201cThat poem became this story. Christian [Robinson] layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolor illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life. This representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Online critics, though, immediately noticed what they claimed were \u201csimilarities\u201d between Markle\u2019s book and another book called \u201cThe Boy on the Bench,\u201d published in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeghan Markle\u2019s new kids\u2019 book is already getting panned before publication \u2014 with online critics accusing it of looking like a rip-off of another work already available in stores,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/05\/05\/markle-accused-of-plagiarizing-2018-kids-book-but-defended-by-author\/\">the New York Post reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you run out and waste money on the book by Harry\u2019s wife, read \u2018The Boy on the Bench\u2019 by Corrinne Averiss and Gabriel Alborozo \u2026 The original,\u201d one Twitter user noted, per the Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll wager a bet that Corrinne\u2019s book is in Archie\u2019s collection. That\u2019s where her idea came from. I don\u2019t believe that this is all her own thinking or reflects her idyllic life whatsoever,\u201d said another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDozens of others soon complained on Twitter that the Duchess of Sussex\u2019s book, \u2018The Bench,\u2019 didn\u2019t only share a similar title to UK author Averiss\u2019 2018 book \u2014 but also similar artwork from Christian Robinson,\u201d the outlet continued. Markle\u2019s book features what appear to be watercolor paintings of children of different races and ethnicities with their fathers.<\/p>\n<p>The revelations, which were not accompanied by evidence that Markle had lifted the storyline of her own work from the UK authors\u2019 children\u2019s book, prompted some of Markle\u2019s critics to call for a boycott.<\/p>\n<p>Corrinne Averiss, who wrote \u201cThe Boy on the Bench,\u201d stepped to Markle\u2019s defense, writing on Twitter that her initial observations of Marke\u2019s project seemed to indicate it was focused on parental relationships, not relationships between children, like her book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReading the description and published excerpt of the Duchess\u2019s new book, this is not the same story or the same theme as The Boy on the Bench,\u201d\u00a0Averiss tweeted. \u201cI don\u2019t see any similarities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe playground is packed with children playing, but Tom is sitting on a bench with his dad. He\u2019s just not sure he\u2019s brave enough to join in,\u201d according to \u201cThe Boy on the Bench\u201d publisher. \u201cTom can\u2019t see a space for himself anywhere in the playground.
