Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/GettyImages-1231667471-1200x800-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"  style=\"display:none\"><\/div>\n<p><span>After nearly two years of promoting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/1619-project\"><span>1619 Project<\/span><\/a><span>\u2019s claim that the United States\u2019 founding began when the British imported African slaves, CNN\u2019s Don Lemon said on Monday night that Europeans actually \u201chad nothing to do with the founding of this country.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The idea that British colonists founded the U.S. is dangerous, potentially incites violence, and explains \u201cwhy you have an insurrection,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lemon got into a low-level spat with fellow CNN host Chris Cuomo during the 10 p.m. hand-off between their shows, as Lemon commented on Cuomo\u2019s interview with former Senator Rick Santorum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cuomo <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/2105\/03\/CPT.01.html\"><span>invited<\/span><\/a><span> Santorum on \u201cCuomo Prime Time\u201d to discuss Liz Cheney\u2019s future in the GOP, but he abruptly changed the subject to Santorum\u2019s viral remarks at a youth event last month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>America\u2019s Founding Fathers \u201cbirthed a nation from nothing,\u201d Santorum <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/blog\/transcripts\/rick-santorum-speech-transcript-there-isnt-much-native-american-culture-in-american-culture\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> Young America\u2019s Foundation in April. \u201cYes, we have Native Americans, but candidly, there isn\u2019t much Native American culture in American culture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He added that the U.S. was \u201csettled predominantly by people who were coming to practice their faith.\u201d They \u201ccame here, mostly from Europe, and they set up a country that was based on Judeo-Christian principles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.08\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I wanted to give you a chance to explain yourself, because that&#8217;s what this show is about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tonight <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisCuomo?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ChrisCuomo<\/a> asked Rick Santorum about Santorum&#8217;s widely-condemned comments on Native American culture \u2013 here&#8217;s the entire clip <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yXZeIsGnpd\">pic.twitter.com\/yXZeIsGnpd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianstelter\/status\/1389395080688152576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 4, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>After Cuomo accused Santorum of \u201ctrying to erase diversity in the interest of some white Christian Right,\u201d Santorum said that he \u201cmisspoke\u201d about the impact that American Indian tribes had on U.S. culture, and that he was specifically discussing \u201cthe Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An exasperated Lemon said the interview made him \u201c<\/span><span>furious.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>I cannot believe the first words out of his mouth weren\u2019t, \u2018I\u2019m sorry. I said something ignorant. I need to learn about the history of this country,\u2019\u201d said Lemon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEuropeans did not found this country,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Native Americans had this country before the Europeans came. Yes, the Europeans conquered the country <\/span><span>\u2014<\/span><span> they colonized it. But they \u2026 had nothing to do with the founding of this country, and [Santorum] should recognize that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lemon implied Santorum\u2019s remarks somehow sparked violence like the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>That\u2019s why you have an insurrection,\u201d Lemon said. \u201cYou have an insurrection, because people believe that America was founded in the image of white people, and \u2026 therefore, the election should go their way.<\/span><span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Don Lemon Slams Rick Santorum For Native American Comments\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/haAfjn5mmHk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Lemon defined Santorum\u2019s remarks as \u201cso egregious and insulting and [opposed to] everything that we talked about, about the founding of this country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, Lemon\u2019s remarks appear to contradict his own previous statements endorsing the 1619 Project\u2019s claim that the United States was founded by European slaveholders, who injected systemic racism into the country\u2019s structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He also maintained the idea that European slavers represented the DNA of the United States until his most recent remarks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>America really needs to grapple with how foundational slavery was to our country,\u201d Lemon<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/2007\/27\/cnnt.01.html\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> the creator of the 1619 Project, Nikole Hannah-Jones, on July 27, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A year earlier, Lemon praised the project as <\/span><span>\u201cgroundbreaking,\u201d telling CNN viewers, \u201cYou\u2019ve gotta read it.\u201d He then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=702278576906542\"><span>recited<\/span><\/a><span> the 1619 Project\u2019s original introducti<\/span><span>on, which said it \u201caims to reframe the country\u2019s history [by] understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Later, The New York Times <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bret-stephens-dismantles-1619-project-thesis-in-search-of-evidence\"><span>quietly deleted<\/span><\/a><span> the report\u2019s attempt to substitute \u201c1619 as our true founding\u201d from its website. After profound backlash, including by some scholars associated with the Pulitzer Prize-winning undertaking, Times columnist Bret Stephens wrote that \u201cthe 1619 Project has failed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Either Europeans founded the United States as a systemically racist nation based on expropriating the wealth of Native Americans and exploiting slave labor, or they had nothing to do with the founding. Both statements cannot be true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s true that the United States removed and retained aspects of Native American culture, and no one should minimize what Lemon called \u201cthe suffering that Native Americans have had to deal with in this country.\u201d But such suffering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uapress.arizona.edu\/book\/north-american-indigenous-warfare-and-ritual-violence\"><span>predated<\/span><\/a><span> Christopher Columbus, let alone the Mayflower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>Contra leftist anthropologists who celebrate the noble savage, quantitative body counts \u2014 such as the proportion of prehistoric skeletons with ax marks and embedded arrowheads or the proportion of men in a contemporary foraging tribe who die at the hands of other men \u2014 suggest that\u201d the pre-Columbian tribal societies \u201cwere far more violent than our own,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edge.org\/3rd_culture\/pinker07\/pinker07_index.html\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span> Harvard scholar <\/span><span>Steven Pinker<\/span><span>. \u201cIn tribal violence, the clashes are more frequent, the percentage of men in the population who fight is greater, and the rates of death per battle are higher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Intertribal warfare sometimes even consummated in acts of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uapress.arizona.edu\/book\/north-american-indigenous-warfare-and-ritual-violence\"><span>cannibalism<\/span><\/a><span>. Evidence of tribal cannibalism stretches back as far as 1150 A.D. \u201cAs many as 40 [tribal] sites scattered across the Southwest contain human bones that show distinctive evidence of having been butchered and cooked<\/span><span>,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2000-sep-07-mn-16941-story.html\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> the <\/span><span>Los Angeles Times <\/span><span>in 2000. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/481728?seq=1\"><span>Iroquois<\/span><\/a> <span>also engaged in acts of ritual cannibalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition, tribes inflicted suffering on their fellow Americans, as some major tribes enslaved black Americans and sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War. In 1860, Cherokees <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theimaginativeconservative.org\/2020\/07\/native-americans-owned-slaves-peter-partoll.html\"><span>owned<\/span><\/a><span> 2,511 slaves; Choctaws owned 2,349 slaves; and members of the Creek and Chickasaw tribes owned thousands more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Five Civilized Tribes were deeply committed to slavery, established their own racialized black codes, immediately reestablished slavery when they arrived in Indian territory, rebuilt their nations with slave labor, crushed slave rebellions, and enthusiastically sided with the Confederacy in the Civil War<\/span><span>,\u201d Paul Chaat Smith, the curator of the National Museum of the American Indian, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/how-native-american-slaveholders-complicate-trail-tears-narrative-180968339\/\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> Smithsonian Magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While tribes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5781480\/three-cornered-war-excerpt\/\"><span>fought on both sides<\/span><\/a><span> of the Civil War, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-native-americans-ended-up-fighting-for-the-confederacy-2019-6\"><span>last Confederate leader to surrender<\/span><\/a><span> to Union forces was Cherokee General Stand Watie on June 23, 1865 \u2014 more than two months after Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lemon, however, said Santorum\u2019s defense of the U.S. founding in 1776 should disqualify him from speaking on the air. \u201cI<\/span><span>f he\u2019s going to be on television representing us and talking about it, he should be doing it from the right perspective,\u201d Lemon said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the jumbled contradictions necessary for Lemon to maintain his narrative that the U.S. Constitution is the fount of all evils in American history has his viewers confused about what that \u201cright perspective\u201d is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>The views expressed in this piece are the author\u2019s own and do not necessarily represent those of The Daily Wire.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
