It saps our energy, and redirects our dialog towards dark places,\u201d CEO Jason Fried wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Fried was determined to cultivate a \u201ccalm\u201d workplace, and he was firm about the new policy, even allowing employees to take buyouts if they didn\u2019t like it. When employees likened a list of funny names to \u201cgenocide,\u201d another co-founder said they were \u201ccatastrophizing,\u201d and that such hyperbole made rational conversation impossible.<\/p>\n<p>But on a Friday videoconference, Fried apologized to employees for not informing them of the changes before posting them to a public blog, and activist employees appeared to smell blood in the water. They unleashed a torrent of criticism against the company and its purported oppression.<\/p>\n<p>After ninety minutes, one senior employee, chief strategist Ryan Singer, expressed a different opinion, saying \u201cI strongly disagree we live in a white supremacist culture,\u201d Casey Newton reported at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/5\/3\/22418208\/basecamp-all-hands-meeting-employee-resignations-buyouts-implosion\">Verge.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you express a dissenting view, you get called a Nazi,\u201d Singer said on the call, according to the version other employees told Newton. \u201cI have not felt this is open territory for discussion. If we were to try to get into it as a group discussion it would be very painful and divisive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fried moved on to the next speaker, saying, \u201cThank you, Ryan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then a black employee demanded to return to Singer\u2019s comments. \u201cThe fact that you can be a white male, and come to this meeting and call people racist and say \u2018white supremacy doesn\u2019t exist\u2019 when it\u2019s blatant at this company is white privilege,\u201d the employee said. \u201cThe fact that he wasn\u2019t corrected and was in fact thanked \u2014 it makes me sick.\u201d Basecamp employees mostly work their white-collar jobs from home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stand by it \u2026 I am very sure I don\u2019t treat people in a racist way,\u201d Singer replied. \u201cIf you want to debate whether [white supremacy] exists anywhere, then yeah. But not here at this company, not with the people I associate with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is f***ing bulls***t. You are being ridiculous,\u201d an employee said, and demanded that Fried \u201cdenounce white supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Verge continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"32\">\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m not here to share my personal views on anything,\u201d Fried said. \u201cI\u2019m horrified when one group dominates another.\u201d Fried, who is Jewish, added that he had lost relatives during the Holocaust. \u201cI think it\u2019s absolutely the most disgusting thing in the world \u2026 I can\u2019t say that\u2019s happening here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Two employees told me that they had found themselves crying and screaming at the screen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The employee continued: \u201cThe silence in the background is what racism and white supremacy does.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A half hour after the meeting ended, Fried posted an internal note saying that Singer has been suspended pending an investigation. He added that the company was bringing in unspecified outside \u201chelp\u201d to address the situation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On Monday morning, in an interview, Fried told me that Singer had resigned.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I asked Fried to clarify his remarks during the Friday meeting, which had clearly caught him off guard.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI denounce white supremacy unconditionally,\u201d he told me.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One-third of employees quit, with one telling Newton, \u201cBasically the company has said, \u2018well, your opinions don\u2019t really matter \u2014 unless it\u2019s directly related to business\u2026\u2019 A lot of people are gonna have a tough time living with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as important as it was for Basecamp employees to be able to express their political views at work, the same apparently did not hold true for Singer.<\/p>\n<p>Singer told The Daily Wire \u201cI imagine the suspension was a necessary legal action on their part just because of the very nature of the accusations against me. I don\u2019t take it personally or interpret it as a political statement and continue to respect Jason and David.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fried did not return a request for comment from The Daily Wire on whether the action against Singer means he believes his own company is white supremacist and whether this signals the end of his no-politics-in-the-workplace stance.<\/p>\n<p>But so far, he appears to have been right about one thing: That political discussions in the workplace sap energy, cause distractions and lead to dark places.
