We extended the public comments deadline for this case, receiving 9,000+ responses,\u201d the Oversight Board announced on Twitter. \u201cThe Board\u2019s commitment to carefully reviewing all comments has extended the case timeline, in line with the Board\u2019s bylaws. We will share more information soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The announcement is being watched closely, and represents a potentially pivotal moment in Trump\u2019s \u201csocial media censorship\u201d timeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here\u2019s a brief history of Trump\u2019s battle with Big Tech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>November 2020 \u2014 Twitter adds fact-check labels to Trump\u2019s tweets<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/01\/11\/trump-banned-social-media\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> noted, Twitter began <\/span><span>\u201cslapping labels on Trump\u2019s posts<\/span><span> that he won the 2020 election,\u201d which read, \u201cThis claim about election fraud is disputed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>January 6 \u2014 Facebook removes video of Trump<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>During the U.S. Capitol building riots on January 6 in Washington, D.C., Facebook removed a video of Trump\u2019s response to the violence. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/1\/7\/22218725\/facebook-trump-ban-extended-capitol-riot-insurrection-block\"><span>The Verge<\/span><\/a><span>, in the video, \u201c<\/span><span>Trump made false claims about the 2020 election results, and told rioters to \u2018go home\u2019 hours after the initial invasion began.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFacebook cycled through <\/span><span>three different labels<\/span><span> on the video before the platform decided to remove it outright around an hour after it was posted,\u201d The Verge added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>January 6 \u2014 Twitter and Facebook suspend Trump<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>In an unprecedented step,\u201d reported the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-2020-donald-trump-us-news-elections-presidential-elections-f343d50d78b48691b847467da8cb9519\"><span>Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cFacebook and Twitter suspended President Donald Trump from posting to their platforms Wednesday following the storming of the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Twitter locked Trump out of his account for 12 hours, and warned that future violations could result in a permanent suspension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>The company required the removal of three of Trump\u2019s tweets, including a short video in which he urged those supporters to \u2018go home\u2019 while also repeating falsehoods about the integrity of the presidential election. Trump\u2019s account deleted those posts, Twitter said; had they remained, Twitter had threatened to extend his suspension,\u201d added the AP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That evening, Facebook and Instagram announced that Trump would not be permitted to post for 24 hours following policy violations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>January 7 \u2014 Facebook bans Trump \u201cindefinitely\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Following the January 6 riots in Washington D.C., Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Trump would be banned on both Facebook and Instagram \u201cindefinitely,\u201d and that the ban would not be lifted until after Inauguration Day \u2014 at the very least.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden,\u201d said Zuckerberg. \u201cWe are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe believe the risks of allowing President Trump to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great, so we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks,\u201d tweeted the Facebook Newsroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.6415662650602\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We believe the risks of allowing President Trump to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great, so we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JkyGOTYB1Z\">pic.twitter.com\/JkyGOTYB1Z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Facebook Newsroom (@fbnewsroom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fbnewsroom\/status\/1347211647245578241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 7, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>January 7 \u2014 Shopify removes Trump\u2019s Trump\u2019s shops<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The e-commerce platform \u201c<\/span><span>removed Trump\u2019s campaign merchandise shop and personal brand from its platform in response to the Capitol attack.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBased on recent events, we have determined that the actions by President Donald J. Trump violate our Acceptable Use Policy, which prohibits promotion or support of organizations, platforms or people that threaten or condone violence to further a cause,\u201d Shopify <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/01\/11\/trump-banned-social-media\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in a statement. \u201cAs a result, we have terminated stores affiliated with President Trump.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>January 8 \u2014 Twitter bans Trump \u201cpermanently\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>On January 8, Twitter followed Facebook and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/company\/2020\/suspension.html\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> that they would permanently suspend Trump \u201cdue to the risk of further incitement of violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAfter close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them \u2014 specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter \u2014 we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,\u201d Twitter wrote in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the post, they provided analysis of two \u201coffending\u201d tweets. The first was, \u201cThe 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The second was, \u201cTo all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These two tweets were assessed under Twitter\u2019s \u201cGlorification of Violence policy,\u201d with the company concluding that these posts by Trump were \u201clikely to inspire others to replicate the violent acts that took place on January 6, 2021, and that there are multiple indicators that they are being received and understood as encouragement to do so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>January 12 \u2014 YouTube suspends Trump\u2019s channel<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/01\/12\/trump-youtube-ban\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_40\"><span>The Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span> reported, \u201c<\/span><span>Google-owned YouTube suspended Trump\u2019s channel for at least a week,\u201d and that \u201cit removed a video of his Tuesday morning news conference \u2018in light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence\u2019 that constituted his first strike.\u201d In addition, YouTube \u201calso indefinitely disabled comments from his channel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.434782608696\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">2\/ Given the ongoing concerns about violence, we will also be indefinitely disabling comments on President Trump\u2019s channel, as we\u2019ve done to other channels where there are safety concerns found in the comments section. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1aBENHGU5z\">https:\/\/t.co\/1aBENHGU5z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 YouTubeInsider (@YouTubeInsider) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YouTubeInsider\/status\/1349205689395245056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 13, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>January 14 \u2014 Snapchat permanently disables Trump\u2019s account<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>On January 14, Snapchat permanently disabled Trump\u2019s account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>In the interest of public safety, and based on his attempts to spread misinformation, hate speech, and incite violence, which are clear violations of our guidelines, we have made the decision to permanently terminate his account,\u201d Snap Inc. spokeswoman Rachel Racusen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/01\/11\/trump-banned-social-media\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in an email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>January 14 \u2014 Twitch disable Trump\u2019s account \u201cindefinitely\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/01\/11\/trump-banned-social-media\/\"><span>The Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span> continued, \u201c<\/span><span>Amazon-owned video service Twitch disabled Trump\u2019s channel indefinitely on Thursday in response to the Capitol riot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGiven the current extraordinary circumstances and the President\u2019s incendiary rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence,\u201d the company said in an emailed statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
