In an appearance on the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/getuperica.com\/334572\/listen-black-juror-in-derek-chauvin-trial-speaks-out-exclusive\/\">Get Up! Mornings<\/a>\u201d show with host Erica Campbell, Mitchell suggested that jury duty was an avenue to fight for social change, similar to voting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, it\u2019s important. If we want to see some change and we want to see some things going different, we got to get out there and get into these avenues and get into these rooms to try to spark some change,\u201d Mitchell told Campbell in an April 27 interview. \u201cJury duty is one of the things. Jury duty, voting, all those little things, the things we got to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The role of a juror is to act impartially and deliver a verdict based on the facts and evidence of a particular case. Mitchell\u2019s suggestion that jury duty is an \u201cavenue\u201d for social change appears to conflict with what he was tasked to do in the Chauvin trial.<\/p>\n<p>Since revealing himself as a juror in the trial, Mitchell has faced scrutiny and backlash for his comments in the media as well as allegations he misled or gave false statements to attorneys about his past before he was selected as a juror in Chauvin\u2019s trial. Mitchell said last week that he decided to speak out after the trial to \u201chelp push for change.\u201d As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chauvin-juror-speaks-out-to-help-push-for-change-suggests-hes-been-pulled-over-by-cops-because-hes-black\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"20\">\n<p><em>\u201cThat\u2019s also part of the reason why I\u2019m speaking up now because that is a narrative that is horrible,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cSo somebody follows directions or not, they don\u2019t deserve to die. That\u2019s completely ridiculous.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mitchell told [The Wall Street Journal] that the hardest testimony for him to hear during the trial was from George Floyd\u2019s brother.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI just related to it too much,\u201d he said. \u201cBeing big, you know, former athlete and all these things \u2014 it just, it really just hit home \u2026 . It just felt like something that easily could have been me or anybody else that I know.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Recently, a photo has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/impartial-juror-who-wore-floyd-themed-blm-shirt-defends-attending-racial-justice-rally-where-floyd-family-spoke-before-trial\">surfaced<\/a> of Mitchell in a Black Lives Matter shirt with a caption that says \u201cget your knee of our necks,\u201d an apparent reference to Chauvin\u2019s arrest of Floyd in May 2020 when the then-police officer knelt on Floyd\u2019s neck. The photo of Mitchell was posted in August by Mitchell\u2019s uncle. It was taken in Washington, D.C., at a rally commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s 1963 \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech.<\/p>\n<p>The photo appears to conflict with claims Mitchell made during the jury selection process, specifically claims he made about participating in demonstrations or marches against police brutality. Mitchell told the court that he had not.
