For example, seventh and eighth graders must be able to \u201crecognize and describe unfairness and injustice in many forms including attitudes, speech, behaviors, policies, practices, and laws.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other standards include explaining the difference between conscious and unconscious bias, understanding that \u201cfair does not always mean that everyone gets the same thing,\u201d and understanding that people \u201cmay face different barriers based on their identity and groups in society.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Before graduation, students must also demonstrate an ability to \u201cunderstand broader historical and social contexts\u2019 impact on humanity\u201d and \u201crecognize, describe, and distinguish inequity and injustice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The VDOE\u2019s \u201cnotice of intended regulatory action\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.virginia.gov\/L\/viewstage.cfm?stageid=9105&#038;display=documents\"><span>page<\/span><\/a><span> indicates that Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam has already signed off on the implementation of \u201csocial-emotional learning.\u201d The standards are undergoing a town hall period wherein parents and educators can comment on the proposal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A Virginia-based concern parents <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stoplcpscrt.com\/2021\/05\/02\/5-2-21-virginia-to-mandate-social-emotional-learning-sel-requirements-to-graduate-in-short-become-a-social-justice-warrior-or-dont-graduate-and-be-branded-for-life\/\"><span>blog<\/span><\/a><span> noted how difficult it can be to find these standards. \u201cIt takes considerable curiosity and some experience with the system to find the Draft Standards\u201d and the comments page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.virginia.gov\/L\/comments.cfm?stageid=9105\"><span>comments page<\/span><\/a><span> is almost entirely filled with criticism about the \u201csocial-emotional learning\u201d proposal. \u201cStop with the neo marxism,\u201d one parent claimed. \u201cStop trying to further divide our population,\u201d said another. \u201cStop with the [social justice warrior] programming.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One comment called the \u201csocial-emotional learning standards\u201d \u201cprofoundly partisan.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Proponents of \u201csocial-emotional learning\u201d believe that K-12 institutions should shape the attitudes, mindsets, values, and behaviors of students. Opponents claim that the parents should be in charge of shaping the values and behaviors of children, while K-12 institutions should focus on teaching traditional academic content.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The VDOE claims that its push for \u201csocial-emotional learning\u201d is part and parcel of its broader equity push. Other items on the VDOE\u2019s equity agenda include ending advanced diplomas state-wide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Wire <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/virginia-may-nix-advanced-diplomas-in-the-name-of-equity\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"16\">\n<p><i><span>During a Zoom meeting, Virginia Education Department\u2019s Director of Policy Leslie Sale announced a newfound effort to review Virginia\u2019s diploma and graduation requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cThis is about \u2026 how and where graduation requirements can operate as a level for equity. So, first, we\u2019re going to start with \u2026 the possibility of consolidating the standard and advanced studies diploma,\u201d Sale said. \u201cHopefully, this discussion will allow us to think through how we maintain a rigorous academic foundation in a way that\u2019s really equitably serving the needs and aspirations of all of Virginia\u2019s learners.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Parents are growing increasingly agitated with the VDOE\u2019s progressive politics and have created action groups designed to combat these standards. One parent organization located in Northern Virginia\u2019s Loudoun County has partnered with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1776action.org\/\"><span>1776 Action<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 which boasts testimonials from Dr. Ben Carson and North Dakota Gov.
