Over the last year, the subway\u2019s nighttime service was suspended in order to provide time for crews to clean as a way of mitigating the spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cToday is a milestone for New York State, and a moment of transition,\u201d New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/05\/03\/nyc-subways-to-resume-24-7-service-after-a-year-of-covid-19\/\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a>, while also announcing the nearing end of \u201cmost\u201d restrictions on capacity across the area. \u201cIf you reopen economic and social activity, you also have to have transportation available. So we\u2019re going to coordinate the MTA\u2019s resumption of 24-hour service with the reopening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/coronavirus\/nyc-bar-scene-roars-back-monday-kicking-off-key-reopening-week-big-nj-news-due\/3032296\/\">announced<\/a> that most capacity restrictions related to COVID-19 in New York and New Jersey will end on May 19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Leaders called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) subway systems to reopen in recent days. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said at an appearance in Manhattan on Sunday, \u201cThe City That Never Sleeps has a name that we have to live up to everywhere, including within our subway service.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Democratic Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/life\/2021\/5\/2\/22411841\/nyc-subway-bathrooms-closed-pandemic-reopening\"><span class=\"s1\">pushed<\/span><\/a> for the MTA to reopen 24\/7 in time for the July 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/04\/29\/world\/covid-vaccine-coronavirus-cases#new-york-city-reopen\"><span class=\"s1\">reopening<\/span><\/a> of the city, the date that he has set for lifting capacity restrictions on shops, stadiums, and restaurants.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cdc-updates-guidelines-on-disinfecting-surfaces-says-not-always-necessary-and-can-be-dangerous\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> last month, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated its guidance on disinfecting surfaces, saying that it is not always necessary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Vincent Hill, Chief of the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch at the CDC, discussed cleaning surfaces during a CDC-sponsored telephone briefing, <span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/19\/health\/cdc-covid-guidelines-cleaning\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> reported<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cCDC determined that the risk of surface transmission is low, and secondary to the primary routes of virus transmission through direct contact droplets and aerosols,\u201d Hill said, adding that the risk of virus transmission when indoors is low, but when outdoors it is even lower because the sun and other factors can kill viruses.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIn most situations, cleaning surfaces using soap or detergent, and not disinfecting, is enough to reduce the already low risk of virus transmission through surfaces,\u201d Hill said. \u201cDisinfecting surfaces is typically not necessary, unless a sick person or someone positive for Covid-19 has been in the home within the last 24 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Earlier this month, the CDC updated its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/more\/science-and-research\/surface-transmission.html\"><span class=\"s1\">guidelines<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on disinfecting surfaces, saying, \u201cThe principal mode by which people are infected with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) is through exposure to respiratory droplets carrying infectious virus. It is possible for people to be infected through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects (fomites), but the risk is generally considered to be low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The MTA has continued with its cleaning routine, however, stating that even the slightest chance of getting the virus from the trains could make some riders not want to choose the subway, the New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/05\/03\/nyc-subways-to-resume-24-7-service-after-a-year-of-covid-19\/\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">New York Authorities plan to continue the effort of cleaning the trains in the coming years, which is a $300 million-per-year cost, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/05\/03\/nyc-subways-to-resume-24-7-service-after-a-year-of-covid-19\/\"><span class=\"s1\">the Post<\/span><\/a>. Cuomo reportedly supports the move.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI can\u2019t tell you how many New Yorkers say to me, \u2018The trains are cleaner than they have ever been.\u2019 I can\u2019t tell you how many New Yorkers say to me, \u2018There are fewer homeless who are now on the train,\u2019\u201d the governor said Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">City Council members wrote a letter asking the governor to shut down the subway system in April 2020 due to the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/04\/18\/gov-cuomo-urged-to-shut-down-nyc-subways-to-stop-coronavirus-spread\/\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> at the time:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>\u201dMTA employees are going to work every day with woefully inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE). They are given one mask and one pair of gloves for an entire week while continuing to work among the filth of the subway,\u201d the letter says, citing complaints by TWU Local 100 members.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>\u201cAs a result, MTA workers are dying at a faster rate than any other front-line workers.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cuomo rejected the plea from the council members.
