Y<\/span><span>ou\u2019re the face of a billion dollar franchise and the hopes of millions of fans now rest on your shoulders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What you probably don\u2019t expect is to face backlash over tweets you\u2019ve interacted with in the months and years before you were drafted.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson finds himself today.<\/p>\n<p><span>The first round selection is under fire for \u201cliking\u201d tweets in support of former President Trump, opposing kneeling in sports, and wishing people would stop \u201cthrusting their beliefs on others.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The backlash first started when Twitter user<\/span><span> \u201c@RzstProgramming\u201d noted Wilson\u2019s apparent support of a pro-Trump tweet. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC), former First Lady Melania Trump, The Daily Wire\u2019s Candace Owens, and others.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"13.174342105263\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This comes at no surprise. Zach Wilson\u2019s mom, Lisa, follows far right QAnon Marjorie Taylor Green, Madison Hawthorne, Melania, and a slew of accounts that serve bigoted and racist content for conservative consumption. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hrcFcHJl1c\">pic.twitter.com\/hrcFcHJl1c<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Resist Programming \ud83d\udef0 (@RzstProgramming) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RzstProgramming\/status\/1388468632364126209?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 1, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time an NFL player has come under fire for their apparent support of conservative politicians and causes. In 2019, Ohio State defensive lineman Nick Bosa faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/football-star-hides-his-kaepernick-criticism-trump-james-barrett?amp\">mass backlash<\/a> for his social media history, particularly his support of conservative accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Bosa scrubbed his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/2019\/04\/10\/nick-bosa-twitter-donald-trump-colin-kaepernick-nfl-draft-san-francisco-49ers\">Twitter account<\/a> prior to the 2019 NFL Draft, deleting a post criticizing Colin Kaepernick as well as a quote tweet of a picture of Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan with the caption, \u201cGoats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mac Jones, selected No. 15 overall out of the University of Alabama in the 2021 draft, also came <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/projected-top-nfl-pick-under-fire-for-nobama-costume-from-2012-when-the-quarterback-was-14\">under fire<\/a> for a 2012 photo which appeared to depict the quarterback (who was 14 years old at the time) in a \u201cNOBAMA\u201d costume, with a mask depicting former President Obama.<\/p>\n<p>Jones was projected to go as high as No. 3 to the San Francisco 49ers, but was scooped up midway through the first round by the New England Patriots as the next quarterback of the legendary franchise.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson is a native of Draper, Utah, and played for three years at BYU. Last season, he completed 247 passes on 336 attempts for 3692 yards with 33 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. The Jets were reportedly enamored with the BYU quarterback after seeing his pro day.
