These are all important topics, but they\u2019re not our topics at work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to reports, one-third of Basecamp\u2019s 57 employees have since resigned, with some celebrating those who decided to leave the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>John Breen, whose bio describes him as \u201cHe\/Him. ADHD. Software developer. Queer. High Maintenance,\u201d tweeted, \u201cLet\u2019s keep track of the folks who are leaving @Basecamp and do what we can to find them a new home where they\u2019re allowed to exist without being told they\u2019re divisive:\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.0095693779904\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Let&#8217;s keep track of the folks who are leaving <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/basecamp?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Basecamp<\/a> and do what we can to find them a new home where they&#8217;re allowed to exist without being told they&#8217;re divisive:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Breen (@_breeeeen_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_breeeeen_\/status\/1388198260603506693?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 30, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>In the replies were multiple apparently disgruntled former employees of Basecamp, such as Zach Waugh who responded, \u201cAfter 7 years, today is my last day at Basecamp. I plan on taking a little time off, but if anyone is looking for an iOS engineer, I would love to chat, my DMs are open.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"12.137440758294\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After 7 years, today is my last day at Basecamp. I plan on taking a little time off, but if anyone is looking for an iOS engineer, I would love to chat, my DMs are open.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Zach Waugh (@zachwaugh) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zachwaugh\/status\/1388190748189802501?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 30, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Now, before looking at the issue at hand, many would view resigning in response to supposedly controversial policies by one\u2019s employer as an example of \u201cputting your money where your mouth is.\u201d Resigning due to deeply held beliefs is principled, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, it\u2019s worth noting that \u201cBasecamp had offered severance of up to six months of salary to employees\u201d who decided they wanted to leave following the founders\u2019 decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These \u201cprincipled\u201d employees who resigned are presumably happy to continue cashing a paycheck for up to six months. Wokeness does have its limits, after all.<\/p>\n<p><span>Whether or not you agree with Basecamp\u2019s decision \u2014 each company is perfectly capable of determining the best internal policies for their business goals \u2014 the response of their employees is deeply indicative of the childish sense of entitlement and self-importance that exists in much of the tech world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/27\/business\/basecamp-politics-ban.html\"><span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span> reported, \u201cSurveys suggest that a large portion of employees believe that the companies they work for should speak up on social issues.\u201d The response to this? So what? Why has it become the norm that employees run the company, even if that means risking straying from the company\u2019s central purpose to achieve irrelevant political aims?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For many tech workers, their career transition has involved several years of college education, followed immediately by the embrace of coddling software companies. Blinded by the benefits rained down upon them, employees soon lose sight of their purpose \u2014 to contribute to the company\u2019s business objectives \u2014 and the hierarchy in which they exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Basecamp\u2019s actions reminded their employees of these obvious realities, and \u2014 like the children many software workers are \u2014 some of them are throwing a tantrum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And why are they throwing a tantrum? Because that\u2019s how spoiled children get their way.
