All they care about is profit,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/live\/?v=915721609210278&#038;ref=watch_permalink\">said<\/a>. \u201cTo them, these people are just commodities. \u2026Obviously, this [vessel] was severely overcrowded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The first call reporting the incident happened before 10 a.m. local time on Sunday, after which multiple groups responded including the U.S. Coast Guard and state and local agencies.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The 40-foot long boat had been severely damaged by the waves by the time rescue teams got to the scene, said Lifeguard Services Lt. Rick Romero at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SDFDofficial\/videos\/915721609210278\"><span class=\"s2\">a news conference<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhen we arrived on the scene\u2026 There were people in the water, drowning, getting sucked out of the rip current\u2026\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe boat was on the reef bouncing back and forth and then just slowly disintegrated into a bunch of pieces,\u201d he added. \u201cThere\u2019s no boat there. It\u2019s all debris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Authorities said that multiple people were rescued from the water and some needed life-saving attempts performed on them once they were on the sand. There were originally about 30 people onboard in extremely crowded spaces without appropriate safety equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cEvery indication from our perspective is that this was a smuggling vessel, used to smuggle migrants into the United States illegally,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/two-dead-23-hurt-when-boat-overturns-off-california-peninsula-2021-05-02\/\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a> Jeff Stephenson, a Border Patrol agent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Stephenson said that his agency has seen an increase in maritime human smuggling attempts in recent years. Officials said that the man who they believe was the operator of the mission is with agents as the investigation unfolds.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The San Diego Fire-Rescue twitter account posted tweets describing the incident with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SDFD\/status\/1388992321601949696\"><span class=\"s1\">photos<\/span><\/a> of the boat\u2019s debris.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.1060606060606\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Photos taken at the scene of the boat incident today. 40\u2019 cabin cruiser broke up along the rocks inside the surf line. Another individual later died at the hospital. The other 12 individuals were all transported to local hospital with injuries ranging from serious to critical, based on initial reporting. CBP said in a statement that \u201call are suspected to have entered the U.S. illegally.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>The second vehicle, a Chevy Suburban, was found in a nearby area \u201cengulfed in flames on the U.S. side of the border,\u201d the Los Angeles Times reported.
