Mayorkas said the extension \u201cwill give states needed time to reopen their driver\u2019s licensing operations and ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting the health, safety, and security of our communities is our top priority,\u201d said Secretary Mayorkas.<\/p>\n<p>Congress approved the REAL ID Act in 2005 to prevent future terrorist attacks and reduce the number of licenses issued to unlawfully present immigrants. The law was approved at the recommendation of the 9\/11 Commission, which had suggested the federal government \u201cset standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver\u2019s licenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/27\/us\/coronavirus-real-id-delay.html\">According<\/a> to the New York Times, \u201csome of the 9\/11 hijackers had obtained driver\u2019s licenses based on bogus documentation.\u201d The legislation established minimum security standards for state-issued driver\u2019s licenses and ID cards, such as counterfeit-resistant security features. It also prohibited federal agencies from accepting forms of identification that do not meet those standards.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/transportation\/2021\/04\/27\/real-id-extension\/\">reports<\/a>, about 43 percent \u201cof Americans with a license and state identification card have a REAL ID-compliant document, generally identifiable by a star in the upper-right corner.\u201d The outlet went on to note, \u201cBecause Real ID requires an in-person visit to the DMV, applicants were not able to get the credential during coronavirus-related closures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Enforcement of the air travel provision to board domestic flights was set to take effect last October. But former President Donald J. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/real-id\/news\/2020\/03\/26\/acting-secretary-chad-wolf-statement-real-id-enforcement-deadline\">directed<\/a> DHS to push back that date by 12 months as DMV offices around the country began to close. The Post reported, \u201cSeveral states were only beginning to issue the new security-enhanced licenses and identification cards when the pandemic hit last year,\u201d and the backlog has caused another delay.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/real-id\/news\/2021\/04\/27\/dhs-announces-extension-real-id-full-enforcement-deadline\">According<\/a> to the DHS statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"21\">\n<p><em>Beginning May 3, 2023, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or identification card, state-issued enhanced driver\u2019s license, or another TSA-acceptable form of identification at airport security checkpoints for domestic air travel. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>All 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and four of five U.S. territories covered by the REAL ID Act and related regulations are now compliant with REAL ID security standards and are issuing REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s licenses and identification cards. However, many state licensing agencies have extended the deadline for renewing expiring licenses due to a widespread shift to appointment-only scheduling protocols during the pandemic that has significantly limited states\u2019 capacity to issue REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s licenses and identification cards.\u00a0As a result, only 43 percent of all state-issued driver\u2019s licenses and identification cards are currently REAL ID-compliant.\u00a0 DHS and various states also need time to implement requirements mandated by the REAL ID Modernization Act, including changes that will streamline processing by allowing the electronic submission of certain documents.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the Washington Post, implementation of the REAL ID Act \u201cwas to take effect in 2008, but deadlines have been extended to give states more time to comply.\u201d The outlet reports, \u201canyone entering nuclear sites, military bases and federal facilities has been required to present a Real ID since 2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
