According to the outlet, \u201cthe resolution cited three policies Gasc\u00f3n implemented after he took office in December following his victory against incumbent Jackie Lacey in the Nov. 3 election.\u201d Those policies included sweeping changes for cash bail and eliminating sentence enhancements \u2013 a reform Gasc\u00f3n later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/los-angeles-countys-new-progressive-d-a-changes-policy-after-public-outcry\">amended<\/a> after public outcry.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Valley Press, Deputy District Attorney John Hatami spoke out against Gasc\u00f3n at the meeting. He is one of several DDAs who have been critical of the county\u2019s new top law enforcement official.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe policies and directives implemented by George Gasc\u00f3n adversely affect the public safety of Lancaster,\u201d Hatami said. \u201cThey don\u2019t help or support the residents of Antelope Valley. Basically these policies provide comfort and support to criminals and wrongdoers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hatami mentioned L.A. County Sheriff\u2019s Sgt. Steve Owen, who was fatally shot execution-style outside a Lancaster apartment complex by a parolee in 2016. The Valley Press reported, \u201cthe parolee pleaded guilty last week and is set to be sentenced May 17 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.\u201d Owens\u2019 widow, Tania, is an honorary chair of the Gasc\u00f3n recall group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf another deputy in Lancaster is killed, we will not seek a special circumstance under George Gasc\u00f3n policies, and that means that person could be paroled at some point,\u201d Hatami claimed. \u201cGoing forward, George Gasc\u00f3n won\u2019t seek life without the possibility of parole in any case, no matter what the circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailybreeze.com\/2021\/04\/28\/la-mirada-whittier-cast-votes-of-no-confidence-against-la-county-da-george-gascon\/?utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twitter.com&#038;utm_campaign=socialflow&#038;utm_content=tw-DailyBreezeNews\">According<\/a> to the Whittier Daily News, the La Mirada City Council\u2019s vote on Tuesday was 4-0, with Councilman Anthony Otero recusing himself \u201cbecause his wife is a deputy district attorney.\u201d The outlet reported Whittier\u2019s vote the same night was 4-1.<\/p>\n<p>More from the Daily News:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"29\">\n<p><em>In both cities, council members criticized Gasc\u00f3n for his new policies of not prosecuting numerous misdemeanor cases, including disturbing the peace, driving without or on a suspended license, drug and paraphernalia possession, littering, loitering to commit prostitution, making a criminal threat,\u00a0 minor in possession of alcohol, public intoxication, resisting arrest, trespassing and under the influence of a controlled substance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat kind of message are we sending by being lenient on our criminals?\u201d Whittier Councilman Fernando Dutra asked. \u201cIf you\u2019re a criminal you can get away with more.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In Whittier, about 200 cases involving these crimes since December haven\u2019t been filed by the District Attorney\u2019s Office, Whittier Police Chief Aviv Bar said. The majority of these are for drug possession, for being under the influence and for possession of drug paraphernalia.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis District Attorney has issued some very dramatic and consequential directives that not only put our county residents at risk but contradict the practices we have come to expect from the prosecutors who pursue justice for victims of crime in Whittier,\u201d said Whittier Mayor Joe Vinatieri.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Daily News, Vinatieri \u201calso criticized Gasc\u00f3n for no longer seeking the death penalty for a gang member accused of fatally shooting Whittier Officer Keith Boyer and trying to kill Whittier Officer Patrick Hazell in 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat heinous crime shocked our community to its very core and challenged the sensibilities of even the most forgiving of those amongst us,\u201d he said. \u201cTo have the prosecution of Officer Boyer\u2019s murderer now take a softer tone under these new directives is not something I am willing to accept or tolerate and I don\u2019t believe our residents are either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles Times reporter James Queally, who has covered Gasc\u00f3n extensively, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamesQueallyLAT\/status\/1387258148990316550\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cIt is annoying to watch city officials completely misstate the policies they\u2019re debating.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.533333333333\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">He&#8217;s saying there&#8217;s no process by which diversion would occur in these cases (not true, literally says this in the directive). Same directive also allows DDAs to appeal up the chain that charges should still be filed when a threat exists to another person or other circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 James Queally (@JamesQueallyLAT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamesQueallyLAT\/status\/1387258501370572804?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 28, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhittier Mayor Joe Vinatieri saying D.A. will \u2018never\u2019 prosecute drug paraphernalia charges,\u201d Queally added. \u201cNot accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whittier Councilman Henry Bouchot opposed the resolution, providing the only no vote. According to the Daily News, \u201cBouchet said the vote was purely symbolic and would carry no legal force.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is an ill-conceived, nearsighted and partisan effort to bolster the recall effort of a sitting district attorney,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Recall organizers told supporters this week that the committee is \u201cworking closely with the Registrar of Voters office and our attorneys to make sure the petition is ready to hit the streets and cannot be challenged by Gascon or his George Soros-funded backers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that we are thorough and detailed down to font size and margin spacing,\u201d a statement from the Gasc\u00f3n recall group said. \u201cThis process only helps our effort to Recall George Gascon and the extra time is allowing us to organize thousands of volunteers and raise needed funds to buy volunteer petition site supplies.
