Ron DeSantis, who is expected to sign it.<\/p>\n<p>If signed, it would require signature verification for voters, provided by a \u201cwet signature\u201d physically signed on paper kept on file, and\u00a0access to drop boxes would be limited to early voting hours unless they are located at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-election\">election<\/a> supervisors\u2019 offices. Drop boxes would also have to be monitored in-person by an elections official, and ID would be required when dropping off ballots.<\/p>\n<p>Other aspects in the bill include limitations on who can return a finished mail-in ballot, preventing election officials from entering consent agreements, and requiring voters to request a mail ballot every election cycle, rather than every two, as under current law.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation would also ban anyone from \u201cengaging in any activity with the intent to influence or effect of influencing a voter\u201d but allow election supervisors to provide \u201cnon-partisan assistance,\u201d such as giving items, including food and water, to voters within the restricted zones.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also requires supervisors to set and publish drop box locations 30 days before the election. Those locations cannot be moved for any purpose.<\/p>\n<p>SB 90 was amended from a previous stricter version which had originally banned drop boxes completely.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis has previously expressed his support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2021\/02\/19\/governor-ron-desantis-highlights-proposed-legislation-to-strengthen-election-integrity-and-transparency-measures\/\">enacting stronger election integrity protections<\/a> and providing unprecedented election transparency for Florida residents.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3784183\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">Florid\u0430 Gov. Ron DeSantis said he supports the bill, noting it \u201cwill ensure that Florida remains a national leader in election security, integrity and transparency,\u201d ABC News reported.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, including state Rep. Anna Eskamani, responded to the Senate\u2019s decision on Thursday, calling it a \u201cGeorgia-style voter suppression bill\u201d on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes it harder to vote by mail, prohibits groups from passing out water to voters and tries to limit ballot boxes. I\u2019m sad but proud of the Democratic Caucus for fighting so hard. Keep fighting,\u201d\u00a0Eskamani wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the state of\u00a0Georgia passed more\u00a0stringent voting laws which elicited widespread condemnation from Democrats, including President Joe Biden who branded it \u201cJim Crow in the 21st Century\u201d and \u201can atrocity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new law adds a host of new voting restrictions, including\u00a0photo identification requirements for absentee voting,\u00a0 limits on the use of ballot drop boxes,\u00a0and making it illegal to take food or water to voters in line.\u00a0It also gives state lawmakers more control over elections.<\/p>\n<p>Other states with GOP-controlled legislatures such as Arizona are also looking at making changes to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/arizona-republicans-push-new-laws-limit-mail-voting-n1261328\">mail-in voting systems.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Jack Phillips contributed to this report.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida\u2019s Republican-controlled Senate on April 29 passed a new bill that\u00a0places several restrictions around vote-by-mail and ballot drop boxes.
