I will never forget when we passed the cancer proposal in the last year I was vice president. Almost $9 million going to NIH, and if you will forgive my personal \u2014 the name of my deceased son. It meant a lot. But so many of us have deceased sons, daughters, relatives who died of cancer. I could think of no more worthy investments, I know of nothing that is more bipartisan. So let\u2019s end cancer as we know it. It is within our power to do it.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Known as the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/research\/key-initiatives\/moonshot-cancer-initiative\"><span>Cancer Moonshot<\/span><\/a><span>,\u201d the initiative Biden referenced had three goals: \u201c<\/span><span>to accelerate scientific discovery in cancer, foster greater collaboration, and improve the sharing of data,\u201d with Congress passing the 21st Century Cures Act in December 2016, \u201cauthorizing $1.8 billion in funding for the Cancer Moonshot over 7 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While the call to end cancer is undeniably worthwhile \u2014 especially since the vast majority of people have a friend or relative who has had cancer or passed away from the disease \u2014 Biden\u2019s promise to \u201cend cancer as we know it\u201d is both naive and cynically simplistic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The reason for this is based entirely on his proposed solution: to throw more money at the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After all, the continuation of the 2016 \u201cCancer Moonshot\u201d was one of many financially-based promises made by Biden on Wednesday evening. However, money is simply not the bottleneck regarding the discovery of a \u201ccure\u201d for cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As <\/span><span>Dr. Margaret Cuomo \u2014 the sister of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/human-interest\/2013\/02\/where-do-the-millions-of-cancer-research-dollars-go-every-year.html\">wrote<\/a> in her book, \u201cA World Without Cancer,\u201d the implied lack of \u201cinvestment\u201d is not the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMore than 40 years after the war on cancer was declared, we have spent billions fighting the good fight. The National Cancer Institute has spent some $90 billion on research and treatment during that time. Some 260 nonprofit organizations in the United States have dedicated themselves to cancer \u2014 more than the number established for heart disease, AIDS, Alzheimer\u2019s disease, and stroke combined. Together, these 260 organizations have budgets that top $2.2 billion,\u201d wrote Cuomo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden\u2019s over-simplification also ignores the complexity of the battle against cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cCancer is as individual as the person who has it,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roswellpark.org\/cancertalk\/201909\/cure-cancer-whats-taking-so-long\"><span>explained<\/span><\/a><span> Joyce Ohm, PhD, Department of Cancer Genetics and Genomics at Roswell Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We should all support the general effort to banish cancer from our society. However, using the damage cancer has caused \u2014 and will continue to cause \u2014 to justify Biden doing nothing but signing yet another blank check to fund government programs with little history of success would be a foolish mistake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
