Robinson\u2019s lawyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-56932263\">said<\/a> that \u201cthere is no realistic chance\u201d his client will be able to afford the $12 million fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDylan Shakespeare Robinson, 23, was also ordered to serve two years of supervised release and pay back $12 million for damages that resulted from the May 2020 precinct fire,\u201d reported the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twincities.com\/2021\/04\/28\/brainerd-man-gets-4-years-for-helping-to-firebomb-minneapolis-police-station-in-may\/#\">Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA federal complaint accused Robinson of lighting a Molotov cocktail that another person threw toward the 3rd Precinct headquarters on East Lake Street. In addition, Robinson and others allegedly tore down a fence that surrounded the building,\u201d the Associated Press added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree other people have pleaded guilty in federal court for their roles in the precinct fire and are awaiting sentencing,\u201d the report concluded.<\/p>\n<p>According to the BBC, Robinson was one of the thousands of people who engaged in weeks of protests and riots in Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd, with Robinson traveling 120 miles south to the city from Brainerd, Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurveillance video at the precinct shows Robinson lighting an \u201cincendiary device\u201d held by another person and later setting a fire inside the station near a first-floor stairwell, officials said,\u201d the BBC added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the night of May 28, 2020, Mr. Robinson chose to depart from lawful protest and instead engaged in violence and destruction. The arson at the Minneapolis Police Department\u2019s Third Precinct put lives at risk and contributed to widespread lawlessness in Minneapolis,\u201d said Acting U.S. Attorney Anders Folk, according to a U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-mn\/pr\/brainerd-man-sentenced-prison-12-million-restitution-minneapolis-police-third-precinct\">statement<\/a>. \u201cWith today\u2019s sentence, Mr. Robinson is held accountable for his actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cATF is committed to investigating the civil unrest arsons of 2020 that occurred throughout the Twin Cities,\u201d said Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jeff Reed, of the ATF St. Paul Field Division. \u201cArson, being inherently violent, is a serious crime that put many of our community members at risk, and it cannot be tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe danger posed by the defendant, in this case, was very real,\u201d said Michael Paul, special agent in charge of the FBI\u2019s Minneapolis field office. \u201cToday\u2019s sentencing sends a clear message \u2014 regardless of motivation, when someone is intent on conducting a violent act that breaks federal law, the FBI and our law enforcement partners will move assertively to hold them accountable. This type of behavior puts public servants and our entire community in danger, and we simply will not let it go unaddressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In June 2020, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kare11.com\/article\/news\/local\/george-floyd\/damage-from-fires-vandalism-in-minneapolis-at-55-million-and-counting\/89-09073537-2473-4604-a17c-9fc3b5f3430b\">reported<\/a> that damage from fires and vandalism in Minneapolis following the Black Lives Matter riots amounted to over $55 million.
