The organization\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconsciouskid.org\/black-authors\"><span>website<\/span><\/a><span> offers a slew of books for children and young adults including titles such as \u201cWoke Baby,\u201d \u201cM is for Melanin,\u201d and \u201cHey Black Child.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The website also promotes the book \u201cKamala and Maya\u2019s Big Idea,\u201d a children\u2019s book written by Meena Harris, the niece of Vice President Kamala Harris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In June, Google\u2019s charity, Google.org, announced that it would partner with the nonprofit by curating a list of reading materials and lesson plans that support \u201cinclusive, anti-racist K-12 classrooms.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The tech giant said in a press release that it supports The Conscious Kid\u2019s embrace of critical race theory \u2014 the theory that America is intrinsically and immutably racist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019ve also teamed up with experts at The Conscious Kid to curate a list of teacher-facing reading materials as well as evaluation criteria to consider when bringing new resources into the classroom,\u201d the Google <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/outreach-initiatives\/education\/creating-more-inclusive-classrooms\/\"><span>press release<\/span><\/a><span> reads. \u201cThe Conscious Kid\u2019s selections are informed by intersectional race-center approaches including Critical Race Theory and Critical Race Media Literacy, which examine representation in the content, as well as the power dynamics behind the ownership, production, and creation of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gstatic.com\/gumdrop\/consciouskid_inclusivereads.pdf\"><span>guide<\/span><\/a><span> says it was \u201ccreated with support from Google for Education\u201d and encourages educators to \u201cre-evaluate\u201d teaching classic books and opt for \u201csocial justice books\u201d instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cRe-evaluate \u2018classic\u2019 books or stories which can convey and reinforce outdated values and messaging of sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, ableism, or colonialism,\u201d the guide reads. \u201cChoose social justice books to help push back against embedded biases and reinforcing values of sexism, racism, or ableism.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the guide, books must \u201ccounter whiteness as the norm or definition of success\u201d and avoid showcasing a character of color that succeeds when \u201cconforming to white values or norms.\u201d So-called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showingupforracialjustice.org\/white-supremacy-culture-characteristics.html\"><span>white values<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d include individualism, objectivity, and a sense of urgency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Conscious Kid sends \u201canti-racist\u201d books to teachers for free for use in classrooms. \u201cIf you are an educator, administrator, school counselor, or librarian at a Title I elementary school, you are eligible to apply to receive a set of these books for free,\u201d its website <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconsciouskid.org\/apply\"><span>says<\/span><\/a><span>, noting that \u201cWithin 8 hours of launching this application, over 3,000 educators in all 50 states applied to receive anti-racist children\u2019s books for their schools. We will be sending books to all of them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the nonprofit\u2019s website, it thanks jewelry designer Kendra Scott for donating $20,000 to launch the fund to donate \u201canti-racist\u201d books to schools and libraries. The nonprofit also boasts that it sent over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/RentReliefForFamilies?utm_campaign=p_cp_url&#038;utm_medium=os&#038;utm_source=customer\"><span>$1.3 million<\/span><\/a><span> in COVID-19 \u201crent relief\u201d to families across the country, $700,000 of which went to black families and $50,000 of which went to the \u201cBlack Trans community.\u201d Large donors included actress Kristen Bell and journalist turned progressive activist Mona Chalabi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the four years preceding July 2018, the most recent period covered in tax filings, it told the Internal Revenue Service it had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.irs.gov\/app\/eos\/detailsPage?ein=814204447&#038;name=Conscious%20Kid&#038;city=La%20Jolla&#038;state=CA&#038;countryAbbr=US&#038;dba=&#038;type=CHARITIES,%20DETERMINATIONLETTERS,%20EPOSTCARD&#038;orgTags=CHARITIES&#038;orgTags=DETERMINATIONLETTERS&#038;orgTags=EPOSTCARD\"><span>less<\/span><\/a><span> than $50,000 in revenue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Google.org\u2019s partnership with The Conscious Kid is part of its broader campaign to \u201camplify diversity in public education.\u201d It <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/626084\/google-book-list-fosters-racial-equity-in-schools\"><span>donated<\/span><\/a><span> $5 million to DonorsChoose, a platform that teachers can use to crowdsource funds for classroom projects, and $1 million to #ISeeMe, an initiative that highlights projects submitted by black and \u201cLatinx\u201d teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other companies and publications such as Nickelodeon, the Washington Post, Forbes, School Library Journal, and Learning for Justice \u2014 the education arm of the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) \u2014 have worked with The Conscious Kid in some capacity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Conscious Kid was co-founded by Katie Ishizuka and Ram\u00f3n Stephens. Ishizuka is the Editor-in-Chief of the School Library Journal, the largest reviewer of child and young adult literature and content. Stephens is a Ph.D. candidate in education studies at the University of California-San Diego.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The duo is best known for their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sophia.stkate.edu\/rdyl\/vol1\/iss2\/4\/\"><span>study<\/span><\/a><span> that claimed the beloved author Dr. Seuss\u2019s children\u2019s literature is rife with \u201corientalism, anti-blackness, and white supremacy.\u201d The study surveyed 50 Dr. Seuss books and concluded that there is not enough diversity in the children\u2019s books, many of which were written in the 1950s and feature cartoon characters with green skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On March 2, which is Dr. Seuss\u2019s birthday and \u201cNational Read Across America Day,\u201d the publisher of Dr. Seuss\u2019s literature <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dr-seuss-books-soar-to-amazons-top-10-list-after-cancellation\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> that it would stop selling six titles, citing racist and insensitive imagery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In celebration of that day, in place of Dr. Seuss, The Conscious Kid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconsciouskid.org\/storytime\"><span>hosted<\/span><\/a><span> Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Kamala Harris, to read \u201cI Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Conscious Kid expanded its audience even more when, in June, it partnered with Nickelodeon for a children\u2019s special entitled \u201cKids, Race, and Unity.\u201d According to a Nickelodeon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nickpress.com\/press-releases\/2020\/06\/23\/nickelodeons-nick-news-returns-with-kids-race-and-unity-a-nick-news-special-hosted-by-global-superstar-alicia-keys\"><span>press release<\/span><\/a><span>, the special featured the leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement and Ibram X. Kendi.
