Early accounts of the meeting, indicate that Cuomo\u2019s administration hid the numbers in order to avoid federal scrutiny. Later reports seem to indicate that Cuomo wanted the number kept quiet as he prepared to unveil a book on leadership based on his experience leading New York, the early epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak, through the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the Times reveals, the effort to obscure the true nursing home COVID-19 death toll was \u201cfar greater than previously known,\u201d and appears to have involved a five-month, all-hands-on-deck effort among Cuomo\u2019s top aides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Cuomo\u2019s most senior aides engaged in a sustained effort to prevent the state\u2019s own health officials, including the commissioner, Howard Zucker, from releasing the true death toll to the public or sharing it with state lawmakers, these interviews and documents showed,\u201d according to the Times\u2019 Thursday report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cA scientific paper, which incorporated the data, was never published. An audit of the numbers by a top Cuomo aide was finished months before it became publicly known. Two letters, drafted by the Health Department and meant for state legislators, were never sent,\u201d the outlet added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cAfter the first wave of coronavirus infections and Covid-19 deaths peaked in April 2020, health officials began trying to figure out how many nursing home residents had died, according to three people with knowledge of the process who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss its details,\u201d the Times reported Thursday. \u201cThe officials surveyed nursing homes late last April \u2014 a process overseen by Mr. Cuomo\u2019s aides \u2014 and gathered data on residents who died in the facilities, as well as those who had died after being transferred to hospitals, the people said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As they gathered the data, Cuomo\u2019s aides started to grow concerned, with one even emailing that \u201c[w]e are getting anxious over here on this report.\u201d Aides rewrote the report \u201cseveral times\u201d in an effort to \u201cemphasize\u201d that nursing home readmissions \u201cwere not a driver of nursing home infections or fatalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A separate report, drafted by health officials, concluded that \u201c[a]pproximately 35 percent\u201d of all COVID-19 deaths at that point in the pandemic \u201cwere nursing home residents\u201d \u2014 a startling number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that version was never published,\u201d the Times noted. \u201cAnd the publicly released report instead claimed 21 percent of all deaths in New York were in nursing homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-report-suggests-nys-nursing-home-deaths-far-higher-than-reported-comes-after-cuomo-declined-to-support-investigation\">Daily Wire noted previously<\/a>, Cuomo\u2019s office rescinded the nursing home policy after just two months, but by then, it had already become clear that something was strange with the administration\u2019s public data. \u201cNot all the deaths,\u201d the Times reported, \u201cwere being included\u201d in the official tally. \u201cThose who died after being transferred to hospitals were not counted as nursing home deaths\u201d even if they contracted their fatal COVID-19 infection in a long-term care facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat statistic that could add thousands to the state\u2019s official care home death toll of just over 6,600,\u201d the Associated Press reported last summer. \u201cBut so far the administration of Democratic Gov.
