Despite subsequent protests, no officers were charged in Taylor\u2019s death, though the city has now banned so-called \u201cno-knock warrants, \u201cprohibiting police from forcibly entering a home without first announcing themselves even if they have a warrant,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/zoetillman\/justice-department-investigate-louisville-police-breonna\">according to Buzzfeed News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like other police departments, that have suffered amid the uptick in anti-police rhetoric and in the wake of the \u201cDefund the Police\u201d movement, Louisville is struggling to find individuals willing to take on a law enforcement role, according to the department\u2019s police union.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNearly 190 cops left the Louisville Metro\u00a0Police Department\u00a0(LMPD) in 2020 and 43 have stepped away from the\u00a0Kentucky city\u2019s agency so far in 2021, either choosing to retire or resign altogether, as law enforcement officials struggle to recruit new members to make up for a deficit in manpower,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/louisville-police-staffing-dire-straits-high-crime-rates-recruitment-woes\">according to Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say that we\u2019re in dire straits,\u201d a union spokesperson told the network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatistics provided by LMPD on Tuesday show the department has hired 26 new members so far this year, while 43 have left. The 1,069-person department falls 255 people short of its \u201cauthorized strength\u201d of 1,324 \u2014 the number of personnel it is authorized to employ,\u201d Fox News added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur manpower is critically low,\u201d the spokesperson added, noting that anti-police sentiment appears to be a critical element. \u201cOne thing we have to consider when we\u2019re talking about recruiting is that in the climate that we currently find ourselves, the pool of people wanting to become officers is shrinking every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the national scrutiny directed at Louisville\u2019s police over Taylor\u2019s death, the Department of Justice is now preparing to investigate the department\u2019s policing practices to determine whether officers have shown a pattern of violating civil rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re obviously losing a lot more officers than we are gaining. And if that continues, at what point can we not operate appropriately?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/commentary\/police-reform-defund-crime-public-safety-20201113.html\">Philadelphia Inquirer noted<\/a>, earlier this year, that the officer staffing problem is not unique to Louisville.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1NBEwUXB-itF_6N-LU2WvHbs4iG-br5s9tM3LKwA6Y2k\/edit?usp=sharing\" data-link-type=\"article-body\">A survey<\/a> of news stories indicates that across America\u2019s 50 largest cities, at least 23 have seen chiefs or line officers resign, retire, or take disability this year,\u201d the outlet reported. \u201cNearly 3,700 beat cops have left, a large proportion from the New York Police Department (down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/nyc-crime\/ny-nypd-retirements-surge-20201008-gh5yzwbgz5dgfh4hmvvys6eur4-story.html\" data-link-type=\"article-body\">7%<\/a> of its officers) but with big drops in <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/politics\/2020\/8\/17\/21372795\/chicago-police-department-retirements-policemens-annuity-benefit-fund-michael-lappe\" data-link-type=\"article-body\">Chicago<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2020\/07\/10\/over-150-minneapolis-police-officers-seeking-disability-claims-after-death-of-george-floyd\/\" data-link-type=\"article-body\">Minneapolis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmj4.com\/news\/local-news\/mpd-spike-in-officers-leaving-the-job-due-to-unrest\" data-link-type=\"article-body\">Milwaukee<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/georgia\/atlanta-police-department-sees-significant-increase-in-resignations-after-protests\/article_ce006cb8-ef08-11ea-a9a7-9fb171abb983.html\" data-link-type=\"article-body\">Atlanta<\/a>, and elsewhere, too.
