According to Gender Nation co-founder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.10news.com\/positivelysandiego\/san-diego-moms-on-a-mission-to-empower-kids-with-inclusive-stories\"><span>Keiko Feldman<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cthese books are just stories that help [kids] feel less alone.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There is no indication that the new gender-affirming books have been added to the official <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pornography-in-schools-teachers-suffering-in-fearful-silence\"><span>curriculum<\/span><\/a><span>. However, a resource teacher in the district\u2019s Youth Advocacy department named Mick Rabin is quoted in the email as saying, \u201cit\u2019s important for kids to\u2026see their stories often and routinely throughout the school year.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A review of the Gender Nation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gendernation.org\/books-we-donate\/\"><span>book list<\/span><\/a><span> reveals sixteen titles geared toward preschool and elementary age children (age 2-8). One title, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/40948486-george?from_search=true&#038;from_srp=true&#038;qid=KREIaKc6jF&#038;rank=1\"><i><span>George<\/span><\/i><\/a><span>, is geared toward children ages 8-12.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some of the children\u2019s books being donated by Gender Nation are physically beautiful, complete with lush watercolor illustrations and lyrical prose. Many of the themes addressed in the books, like individuality, self-confidence, and kindness, are standard fare for children\u2019s literature. However, many parents, including the mom who <\/span><span>reached out to me<\/span><span> about this story, are concerned about the effect the books could have on children. Rather than resolving alienation, as intended, parents worry that the introduction of transgender ideology to young children will end up creating gender confusion in children who would not otherwise struggle with them or exacerbating or prolonging such feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Those parents are joined in their concerns by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2017\/07\/03\/im-pediatrician-transgender-ideology-infiltrated-field-produced-large-scale-child-abuse\/\"><span>medical professionals<\/span><\/a><span>. While gender\u00a0 \u201caffirmative<\/span><i><span>\u201d<\/span><\/i><span> children\u2019s books explicitly teach children to embrace gender dysphoria as a stable component of their identity, research suggests that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/futureofyou\/441784\/the-controversial-research-on-desistance-in-transgender-youth\"><span>65-94%<\/span><\/a><span> of children with gender dysphoria eventually outgrow it. In light of this research, the use of puberty blocking drugs has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/lifestyle\/health\/health-problems\/uk-court-bans-use-of-puberty-blockers-for-children-under-16\/news-story\/83a727926333471ec302af6ea4a3a727\"><span>banned<\/span><\/a><span> for persons under 16 in the UK (with exceptions granted with a court order), and the nation\u2019s only youth gender clinic has been rated \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-56539466\"><span>inadequate<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d by inspectors and its treatments have sparked a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-51806962\"><span>lack of confidence<\/span><\/a><span> by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/quillette.com\/2020\/01\/17\/why-i-resigned-from-tavistock-trans-identified-children-need-therapy-not-just-affirmation-and-drugs\/\"><span>clinicians themselves<\/span><\/a><span>. Similar restrictions on hormone therapy have been considered in several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/04\/08\/states-consider-bills-medical-treatments-transgender-youth\/7129101002\/\"><span>US states<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of the sixteen books on the Gender Nation book list, 7 explicitly endorse childhood transgenderism and\/or gender fluid ideology. They include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>I Am Jazz<\/i><\/b><span>, by Jessica Herthel and YouTube star <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VhskP4MQ0Sc\"><span>Jazz Jennings<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cFrom the time she was two years old, Jazz knew that she had a girl\u2019s brain in a boy\u2019s body.\u201d (Age: 4-8 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>George<\/i><\/b><span>, <\/span><span>by Alex Gino. \u201cWhen people look at George, they think they see a boy. But she knows she\u2019s not a boy. She knows she\u2019s a girl.\u201d (Age: 8-12 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>It Feels Good To Be Yourself<\/i><\/b><i><span>, <\/span><\/i><span>by Theresa Thorn. \u201cSome people are boys. Some people are girls. Some people are both, neither, or somewhere in between.\u201d (Age: 4-8 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some of the kids\u2019 books approach gender fluidity through metaphor, which may cause confusion in adults as well as children:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Neither<\/i><\/b><span>, <\/span><span>by Airlie Anderson. \u201cIn the Land of This and That, there are only two kinds: blue bunnies and yellow birds. But one day a funny green egg hatches, and a little creature that\u2019s not quite a bird and not quite a bunny pops out. It\u2019s neither!\u201d (Age: 4-8 years)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Red: A Crayon\u2019s Story<\/i><\/b><span>, by Michael Hall. \u201cRed has a bright red label, but he is, in fact, blue.\u201d (Age: 4-8 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea<\/i><\/b><i><span>, <\/span><\/i><span>by Kai Cheng Thom. \u201cThe only problem is they can\u2019t decide what to be: A boy or a girl? A bird or a fish? A flower or a shooting star?\u201d (Age: 3-8 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An additional 3 books discuss gender-nonconforming dress and\/or a child\u2019s fascination with dressing as the opposite gender:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Annie\u2019s Plaid Shirt<\/i><\/b><span>, <\/span><span>by Stacy B. Davids. \u201cAnnie loves her plaid shirt and wears it everywhere\u2026She feels weird in dresses. Why can\u2019t her mom understand?\u201d (Age: 3-8 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Juli\u00e1n is a Mermaid<\/i><\/b><span>, by <\/span><span>Jessica Love. \u201cAll he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume. But what will Abuela think about how Juli\u00e1n sees himself?\u201d (Age: 4-8 years)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>One of a Kind, Like Me<\/i><\/b><span>, <\/span><span>by Lauren Mayeno. \u201cTomorrow is the school parade, and Danny knows exactly what he will be: a princess. Mommy supports him 100%.\u201d (Age: 4-8 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Sparkle Boy<\/i><\/b><span>, by Leslea Newman. \u201cWhen older boys at the library tease Casey for wearing \u2018girl\u2019 things, Jessie realizes that Casey has the right to be himself and wear whatever he wants.\u201d (<\/span><span>Age: 5-8 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An additional three titles discuss homosexuality, nontraditional family structure and LGBT activism:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>And Tango Makes Three<\/i><\/b><span>, b<\/span><span>y Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell. \u201cThe heartwarming true story of two penguins who create a nontraditional family.\u201d (Age: 2-5 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>The Bravest Knight Who Ever Lived<\/i><\/b><span>, b<\/span><span>y Daniel Errico. \u201cKnights, dragons, and princesses are the things all good fairy tales are made of, but what happens when the tale has an LGBTQ ending?\u201d (Age: 5-6 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag<\/i><\/b><span>, b<\/span><span>y Rob Sanders. \u201cIn this deeply moving and empowering true story, young readers will trace the life of the Gay Pride Flag, from its beginnings in 1978 with social activist Harvey Milk and designer Gilbert Baker to its spanning of the globe and its role in today\u2019s world.\u201d (Age: 5-8 years)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The final 2 books, <\/span><b><i>It\u2019s Okay to Be Different<\/i><\/b><span> b<\/span><span>y Todd Parr and <\/span><b><i>Marisol McDonald and the Clash Bash<\/i><\/b><span> b<\/span><span>y Monica Brown<\/span><span> appear to focus on individuality without overt gender focus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Having watched a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.10news.com\/positivelysandiego\/san-diego-moms-on-a-mission-to-empower-kids-with-inclusive-stories\"><span>short video<\/span><\/a><span> about the founders of the organization, I have compassion for the two mothers behind Gender Nation. Having many gay and lesbian friends who struggled in middle and high school, I relate to their desire to show kids that they are not alone. However, as I\u2019ve written about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/liberals-please-grow-a-spine-and-say-no-to-child-gender-transition\"><span>before<\/span><\/a><span>, I also harbor deep concerns with transgender ideology, which I believe strays far afield of legitimate science. Most importantly, I believe <\/span><i><span>all<\/span><\/i><span> aspects of human sexuality are beyond the purview of elementary school instruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>How do you feel about children\u2019s books featuring transgender characters?
