The character was smart, charismatic, and unafraid \u2014 a dream role for lots of women like me in Hollywood,\u201d she said. \u201cBut something about this character felt uncomfortable in a way that was new for me, it felt\u2026 false. I realized it was because the premise of the show wasn\u2019t focused on the complicated ways that police officers abuse their power or how unconscious anti-Black bias flavors the way that Black neighborhoods are policed by mostly white police forces. Instead, it was just a story about one cop. One \u2018good\u2019 cop. One cop who was intentionally being cast as a person of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph \" readability=\"26.825096691018\">\n<div class=\"paragraph \" readability=\"23\">\n<p>\u201cBy casting cops as non-white, Hollywood thinks they can avoid inconvenient discussions about racism and power, but the truth is that you don\u2019t have to be white to uphold the tenets of white supremacy; you just have to believe in its validity,\u201d she continued. \u201cSuddenly the stakes of the role came into clear focus for me, and I couldn\u2019t imagine willingly perpetuating a distortion such as this, supporting the narrative that cops were generally well-intentioned protectors of all citizens, only occasionally lumped in with a few \u2018bad apples.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After further going on to knock police departments as a perpetrator of white supremacy, Nicole added that she looks forward to using her talent to uplift \u201cthe various communities I belong to, that will remind people struggling to see themselves represented in realistic and thoughtful ways that we don\u2019t deserve to be flattened and watered down to serve someone else\u2019s narrative of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph \" readability=\"30.443306510607\">\n<p>\u00a0In an op-ed for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/06\/04\/shut-down-all-police-movies-tv-shows-now\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> last year, Alyssa Rosenberg argued that police shows should be canceled entirely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no question that it would be costly for networks and studios to walk away from the police genre entirely,\u201d Rosenberg wrote.\u00a0\u201cCanceling Dick Wolf\u2019s \u2018Chicago\u2019 franchise of shows would wipe out an entire night of NBC\u2019s prime-time programming; dropping \u2018Law &#038; Order: Special Victims Unit\u2019 and a planned spinoff would cut even further into the lineup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosenberg went on to argue how Hollywood and police departments have been collaborating on projects throughout the years, leading the industry to show police only in a positive light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a century, Hollywood\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sf\/opinions\/2016\/10\/24\/how-police-censorship-shaped-hollywood\/\">has been collaborating<\/a>\u00a0with police departments, telling stories that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sf\/opinions\/2016\/10\/26\/in-pop-culture-there-are-no-bad-police-shootings\/\">whitewash police shootings<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sf\/opinions\/2016\/10\/27\/the-drug-wars-most-enthusiastic-recruit-hollywood\/\">valorizing an action-hero style of policing<\/a>\u00a0over the harder, less dramatic work of building relationships with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sf\/opinions\/2016\/10\/25\/how-pop-cultures-cops-turned-on-their-communities\/\">the communities cops are meant to serve and protect<\/a>,\u201d she writes. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason for that beyond a reactionary streak hiding below the industry\u2019s surface liberalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/washington-post-op-ed-cancel-all-cop-shows\">Washington Post Op-Ed: Cancel All Cop\u00a0Shows<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
