She did not concede defeat,\u201d\u00a0Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5958086\/brad-raffensperger-georgia-election-law\/\">interview<\/a> with TIME published on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The suggestion that Abrams could have contributed to Georgia\u2019s election confidence problem appeared to ruffle the feathers of the left-leaning news magazine, which added an asterisk and a lengthy note attempting to discredit Raffensperger\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStacey Abrams\u00a0said\u00a0in 2018 that she acknowledged governor Brian Kemp would be certified as the election\u2019s winner,\u201d read the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210426204324\/https:\/\/time.com\/5958086\/brad-raffensperger-georgia-election-law\/\">original<\/a> fact-check note. (In the same speech when Abrams made those remarks, Abrams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/video\/2018\/nov\/17\/this-is-not-a-concession-speech-stacey-abrams-announces-lawsuit-georgia-election-video\">also stated<\/a>: \u201cLet\u2019s be clear, this is not a speech of concession.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Raffensperger\u2019s communications director told The Daily Wire that after they complained, TIME edited the fact-check note to acknowledge that Abrams has reminded the public numerous times since 2018 that she has not conceded the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStacey Abrams\u00a0said\u00a0in 2018 that she acknowledged governor Brian Kemp would be certified as the election\u2019s winner but has said repeatedly that she did not concede,\u201d read the edited sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of TIME\u2019s fact-check note remained the same, citing Abrams\u2019s remarks at a Senate Judiciary Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/meetings\/jim-crow-2021-the-latest-assault-on-the-right-to-vote\">hearing<\/a> earlier this month during which she agreed that her Republican opponent won but said it was under unfair rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I have always said, I acknowledged at the very beginning that Brian Kemp won under the rules that were in place,\u201d Abrams told the committee. \u201cWhat I object to are rules that permitted thousands of Georgia voters to be denied their participation in this election and had their votes cast out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raffensperger has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/trump-runs-the-stacey-abrams-playbook-11607295416\">accused<\/a> Abrams of \u201ccollecting hundreds of millions of dollars from donors convinced the election had been stolen from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Georgia has suffered a crisis of election confidence over the last several years, the state\u2019s election system weathering attacks from both Democrats and Republicans for a slew of reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Governor Brian Kemp, Abrams\u2019s former opponent, was Georgia\u2019s secretary of state at the time of the 2018 election. In that role, he oversaw a massive voter roll purge of hundreds of thousands of Georgians who had moved away, died, or skipped too many elections. Kemp argued the move was to protect the election from fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Last year in the wake of the presidential election, Raffensperger said he came under pressure from fellow Republicans as they scrambled to find a way to reverse former President Donald Trump\u2019s narrow defeat in the former Republican stronghold. The secretary of state said he even received death threats as Georgia conducted a recount in November.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Kemp signed a new voting law that prompted an immediate outcry from critics who declared the law \u201cJim Crow 2.0.\u201d Democrats condemned the law as severely restricting voting access, especially for voters of color, while President Joe Biden called the law an \u201catrocity\u201d and said that his Justice Department is reviewing it.<\/p>\n<p>Raffensperger has defended the law, arguing that it expands rather than restricts voting access.
