Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/fb_image-399.jpeg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.0.3\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"  style=\"display:none\"><\/div>\n<p><span>The University of Pittsburgh has reconfigured its grading policy to allow students to receive a passing grade for incomplete or missing assignments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/officeoftheprovost.cmail20.com\/t\/ViewEmail\/j\/E93FB1519E71E2682540EF23F30FEDED\/B6280FBA7550F32E0367819F23434F99\"><span>announcement<\/span><\/a><span> from the university\u2019s Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, professors will now be able to give students a passing \u201cG\u201d grade for assignments that are incomplete before the end of the semester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cG\u201d grades were temporary placeholders for incomplete or missing assignments, when an assignment was not turned in the \u201cG\u201d grade became a \u201cno grade\u201d or \u201cNG.\u201d Now, professors can alter the \u201cG\u201d grading system and give a student a letter grade for an assignment that was never turned in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis new process will allow a \u2018fallback grade\u2019 to be recorded in cases where a student has done enough to achieve a passing grade in a course but would like more time to finish some well-defined final assignments,\u201d said Vice Provost Joseph McCarthy. \u201cAs with all G grades, you will need to work out those details with your instructor.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=17375\"><span>Campus Reform<\/span><\/a><span>, during a University Senate\u2019s Faculty Affairs committee meeting, McCarthy confirmed that \u201cfall back grades\u201d \u2014 the term for giving students letter grades for incomplete work \u2014 can be used in the interim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn fact, the only thing that we are changing is allowing faculty to have the option of note \u2014 at the time that they award the G grade \u2014 the grade to which an expired G grade should revert,\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cIf a faculty member were to note a \u2018fallback grade\u2019 then expired G grades will revert to the identified fallback grade instead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The university initially offered pass\/fail grading options to students in the fall semester to aid with the stress of the global pandemic, though it transitioned back to regular grading as the pandemic began to wane.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/164650\/news\/pitt-clarifies-new-g-grade-policy-professors-and-students-voice-mixed-feelings\/\"><span>Pitt News<\/span><\/a><span>, some professors at the university are proponents of the new grading system and believe that the stress of the pandemic is ongoing for students. Ilia Murtazashvili, an associate professor from the Graduate School for Public and International Affairs, said that students are still unable to perform at normal standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou need to recognize that what constitutes \u2018A\u2019 work in the pandemic is different from what constitutes \u2018A\u2019 work in normal times,\u201d Murtazashvili <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/164650\/news\/pitt-clarifies-new-g-grade-policy-professors-and-students-voice-mixed-feelings\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cPeople should be able to get an \u2018A,\u2019 even if they\u2019ve been at 50 percent ability to do their work or less the past year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Grading structures are shifting in light of the coronavirus pandemic as well as the push for \u201cequity\u201d in both higher education and the K-12 education system. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/virginia-public-schools-end-advanced-diplomas-equity\"><span>Fox News<\/span><\/a><span>, the Virginia Department of Education is considering ending advanced diplomas state-wide in the name of equity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The shift in rigorous grading to more equitable grading in American education has been critiqued by many who view China as a growing threat.
