Ben &#038; Jerry\u2019s screamed on Twitter, \u201cWe\u2019ll never police our way out of the homelessness crisis, and Prop B would take Austin backwards. Then-Austin Mayor Greg Casar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kut.org\/austin\/2019-06-21\/austin-votes-to-scale-back-laws-opponents-say-criminalize-homelessness\">stated<\/a>, \u201cI know that changing these ordinances will be unpopular with some people. I\u2019m not trying to downplay the challenges that we\u2019re going to face, but we can take on those challenges in a better way. We can house people. We can serve people. We can address the core issues. We can improve all of our safety, rather than perpetuating instability and insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saveaustinnowpac.com\/\">Save Austin Now<\/a> states on its website, \u201cEvery day, Austinites are suffering from the free-for-all associated with the City\u2019s deregulation of all public camping and aggressive panhandling. Crime has skyrocketed 43%. We\u2019re on track for more murders this year than in the last 3 years combined. Lawlessness is not helping the homeless and it\u2019s not helping Austin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt Mackowiak, one of the co-founders of Save Austin Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2021\/01\/27\/homeless-austin-camping-pandhandling-greg-abbott-steve-adler\/\">said in January<\/a>, \u201cThe camping ordinance has been a disaster for the city and it\u2019s been bad for the homeless. We just fundamentally reject the idea that camping is good for the homeless. Telling a homeless person you can go live on the side of the highway and fend for yourself and try to survive hour to hour and day to day with no help is not compassionate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Current Austin Mayor Steve Adler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/2021\/01\/21\/homelessness-austin-repeal-camping-ban-not-working-adler-says\/4243652001\/\">said<\/a> the 2019 reversal of the city\u2019s camping ban \u201cis not working. \u2026 Going back to where we were we know doesn\u2019t work \u2013 and what we\u2019re doing now we also know doesn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In mid-April,\u00a0in the wake of the shooting of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, Ben &#038; Jerry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/must-be-dismantled-ben-jerrys-attacks-americas-police-system\">tweeted<\/a> that America\u2019s police system \u201ccan\u2019t be reformed\u201d and \u201cmust be dismantled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben &#038; Jerry\u2019s wrote, \u201cThe murder of #DaunteWright is rooted in white supremacy and results from the international criminalization of Black and Brown communities. This system can\u2019t be reformed.
